DELANO, MN Following much discussion at a special work session Monday night, the Delano School Board made a mid-week announcement that current high school principal Matt Schoen will become the district’s next superintendent.
“After many hours of reviewing 32 well-qualified resumés, conducting preliminary interviews with nine incredible candidates, holding staff/community question-and-answer sessions, and final interviews with three amazing educational leaders . . . we have found the next superintendent of the Delano School District,” said Delano School Board Chairperson Amy Johnson.
The school board was expected to act on the contract in a special meeting Friday.
Current superintendent Dr. John Sweet will retire June 30.
In the search process, the Delano School Board was looking for someone who is a visionary leader with the ability to motivate, challenge, and inspire the school board, staff, community and students, as well as one who embraces the core values of the district, and is a knowledgeable educator who understands curriculum and effectively works with the entire school community.
“On behalf of the Delano School Board, we would like to thank everyone who participated in the selection process. We greatly appreciated all the feedback from staff and community members, as it helped us process our thoughts and tie this information back to the vision of what we were looking for in a leader,” Johnson said.
Currently the principal at Delano High School, Matt Schoen has served in this capacity since 2007.
Schoen grew up in Milan, Italy, and obtained his bachelor of arts degree from St. John’s University in 1988 with a major in social sciences and a minor in secondary education.
He completed his master’s degree in secondary education administration in 1996 from the University of St. Thomas. Schoen went on to receive a specialist degree in education administration from the University of St. Thomas, and his superintendent licensure in 2010 from St. Cloud State University.
Prior to coming to Delano, Schoen was principal of Columbia Heights High School from 2003 to 2007, assistant high school principal at Owatonna High School from 1999 to 2003, and principal of St. Mary’s School in Worthington from 1996 to 1999.
He was a social studies department chair/teacher at St. Agnes High School in St. Paul from 1989 to 1996.
Additional contract information was requested from Johnson, but not received as of press time.
