DASSEL, COKATO, MN For those looking for a place to go Thanksgiving Day, there is an opportunity in both Dassel and Cokato where one can find a free Thanksgiving dinner with all the fixings.
LeAnn and Louis King of Cokato are sponsoring a community meal at Cokato City Hall Thursday for those with no place to go or without means.
LeAnn said that years ago, their church in Hutchinson would sponsor a Christmas dinner, which is where she got the idea for this.
Also, LeAnn cleans for the senior apartments in town and one fall day, she and her husband decided to have a barbecue and invite the residents.
“They were so appreciative,” LeAnn said. One resident even told her that it was their first grilled hamburger of the season.
That got her thinking, “I wonder how many of the people in the community have no place to go.”
Thanksgiving isn’t just about having a place to go, she said. “It’s about being together.”
The Thanksgiving dinner will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday on the second level of city hall.
“We’re really excited to do this,” LeAnn said, adding that the couple has a good crew of volunteers to help.
RSVP is preferred, but not required for planning purposes only, (320) 286-5580.
Dinner in Dassel
Dassel couples Ken and Mary Neu, and Steve and Becky Nelson have been hosting a Thanksgiving dinner for the past seven years at Gethsemane Lutheran Church fellowship hall, starting at noon.
On average, there are between 20 to 50 people each year who either want to come to share a meal, or may not have the means for a Thanksgiving dinner.
“We look forward to sharing the day with people who enjoy having company to make it a special day of thanks,” Neu said.
Guests may bring a dish to share, but it is not required. Also, any donations received, though not necessary, go to the local food shelf.
There will also be games available for families and others to play if they are interested.
