“Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes; and I will keep it to the end.
“Give me understanding, that I may keep thy law and observe it with my whole heart.
“Lead me in the path of thy commandments, for I delight in it.
“Incline my heart to thy testimonies, and not to gain!
“Turn my eyes from looking at vanities; and give me life in thy ways.
“Confirm to thy servant thy promise, which is for those who fear thee.
“Turn away the reproach which I dread; for thy ordinances are good.
“Behold, I long for thy precepts; in thy righteousness give me life!”
TheBook of Psalms is a song book and a prayer book for God’s people. It is also a book filled with a rich understanding of God and God’s people.
In Psalms, we find so many ways to pray, sing, meditate to our gracious God in Jesus the Christ. Let us a look at the above verses.
Teach me, we ask plead to God. Teach me what? How to make a million dollars? How to be number one? No.
We plead to learn the way of the Lord/Yahweh this God whom we know in/through Jesus, God’s Son and our Redeemer and Saviour.
The God who Is; no beginning and no ending. This Lord Is; the same today, yesterday, and forever and ever.
Such a God calls us to be His by trust, faith to be His children by His love and mercy; not in trembling and fearful “subject,” but as children.
This God of ours, whom the Psalmist names as Lord in the Hebrew “Yahweh,” which translates “I am who I am” the eternal God, known as Creator, Redeemer, Sanctifier. This, three-fold, is eternally God, God for us and not against us seen in creating us in that marvelous event of our birth; in that second birth of Holy Baptism; in that longing new birth/creation in the glory of heaven.
Such a God, who is all powerful all loving all forgiving to us. To us, His erring children, yet loved.
Alleluia! Praise the Lord! Amen and amen so it was, and is, and shall be. Amen.
