COKATO, MN – Tradition lives on with the 64th annual Cokato Corn Carnival, which kicks off Monday, Aug. 12.

Fresh sweet corn, fun fair rides, and corn bingo are just a few of the attractions that keep people coming back year after year.

“The Cokato Corn Carnival changes every year in order to make it better, but the goal is to make it the same so it matches your memory as it always was,” said Cokato Corn Carnival Chair Dorene Erickson.

This year, Erickson is hoping for better weather than last year.

Last year, it rained Tuesday night, though it stopped just in time to have the Miss Cokato coronation on the outdoor stage.

Wednesday night, however, severe weather warnings were predicted so the Divas Through the Decades show was moved into the Cokato Elementary auditorium.

“Because so few people were able to attend that performance, we invited them back this year,” Erickson said.

Funded, in part, with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, Divas Through the Decades is a trio of talented performers who will present a musical tribute to some of the most influential female vocalists of the 1960s, ‘70s, ‘80s and today. They will perform Wednesday at 8 p.m. on the main stage.

Hometown girl, Rachel Kurtz is a singer, songwriter and speaker. She will be the musical entertainment on the stage Monday following the parade.

Despite the late planting, Erickson has been assured that there will be plenty of free corn-on-the-cob provided by Faribault Foods. Corn will be served Tuesday and Wednesday from 4 to 9 p.m.

One change this year is there won’t be any cash drawings Tuesday night – typically there are four $100 prizes.

Cash giveaways will be Wednesday at 10 p.m. for $1,000, $1,500, and $2,500, in addition to the car raffle for a 2013 Ford Focus.

Advance ride tickets

Returning to the Midway rides this year is the Ferris wheel, a staple ride for many. Tickets for this and other rides from Stipes Shows can be purchased in advance – three for $5 – at any of the participating businesses: Chuck’s Floral, First National Bank of Cokato, Keaveny Drug, Kensington Bank, Kirk’s Travel Plaza, Lantto’s Store, and the Marketplace.
