McLEOD COUNTY, MN – The final countdown to the 2013 McLeod County Fair has begun.

Several new attractions are planned Wednesday, Aug. 14 through Sunday, Aug. 18, including a “birthday bash” to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the “new” fairgrounds.

“People still call it the new fairgrounds,” fair manager Casey Walters said.

Free birthday cake will be served in the south tent/pavilion Saturday, Aug. 17, at 4 p.m. until it’s gone. There will also be a drawing for an adult bike.

Another new, free event will be Christian Lilienthal’s Zoo, with exotic animals each day of the fair.

Fairgoers are also welcome to check out the new daily “happy hour” in the pavilion, from 3 to 5 p.m., with beer for $2.

Several presentations and demonstrations pertaining to the arts, cultural heritage, and Minnesota history will be scheduled at the fair’s new McLeod County Legacy Stage. The stage was made possible through Legacy funds, as well as the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.

“We’ll have fun topics for all ages – metal smithing, the history of aprons, and more,” Walters said.

Free health screenings
Presentations pertaining to health will also be featured at the fair.

Thursday, Aug. 15, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Glencoe Regional Health Services, Hutchinson Health, and McLeod County Public Health will be offering free cholesterol and blood sugar screenings at the corporate tent. A children’s obstacle course will also be available.

Friday, Aug. 16, medical professionals from Hutchinson Health will speak about various health topics throughout the afternoon.

Grandstand greatness
New to the grandstand this year is AMA racing, Saturday, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m.

Other grandstand events include: MotoCross at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, AutoCross at 7 p.m. Friday, and Xtreme Demolition Derby at 5 p.m. Sunday.

Dance to the music
Country/rock band Maiden Dixie is new to the McLeod County Fair, and will be performing Wednesday, Aug. 14 from 6 to 10 p.m.

Other returning headliners include Blurred Vision at 6 p.m. Thursday; Hairball at 8 p.m. Friday; and DiamondBack at 8 p.m. Saturday.

McLeod County’s got talent
The 34th annual McLeod County talent contest will take place at noon Sunday, Aug. 18 in the North Corporate Tent.

Other contests throughout the week include the Classic RibFest, a car and motorcycle show, a chocolate lovers baking contest, veggie races, a Lego building contest, a pedal tractor pull, and more.

Rides and games
Amusement Attractions will be returning as the McLeod County Fair’s carnival provider this year.

Advance ride tickets (five rides for $10) are available at select banks throughout McLeod County, and at the fair office.

Other attractions include livestock, flowers, vegetables, fine art, and photography, which will be judged throughout the fair.
