Landscape Structures donates more than 1,000 fresh herbs

DELANO, MN It may have snowed in Delano last Monday, but thanks to Landscape Structures, the taste and smell of spring was inescapable.
In honor of Earth Day, the company gave potted herbs, along with healthy herb recipes, to the first 300 patrons at Coborn’s in Delano, as well as to nearly 900 students and teachers at Delano Elementary School.
“It went phenomenal the kids were so excited,” said Holly Williams, Landscape Structures’ wellness coordinator.
The donation was part of the Healthy Delano project, a community program designed to help Delano residents find resources for healthy eating and activities.
“April is the month we promote healthy activities for kids, and we decided to tie it into Earth Day,” Williams said.
Thirteen varieties of herbs (grown by Otten Bros. in Delano) were available, and each student got to take home basil, dill, fennel, chives, mint, or other fresh plants.
“The hallway was packed solid. It smelled so good,” Williams said.
Children also received a care guide, showing the five basic things an herb needs to survive: water, food, warmth, air, and light. The top of the card playfully states, “Herbs are just like you!”
