HOWARD LAKE, MN A Geekquinox is “when a nerd levels up to the next level,” said Cristy Blanchette, owner of the new micro-spalon in Howard Lake that bears that name.
Blanchette, a licensed beautician for 20 years, has “leveled up” by entering into a new season of life owning and operating her own natural health and beauty business focusing on hair, skin, and nails.
Studio salons, small, independent salons owned and operated by one individual, are becoming more and more popular, Blanchette noted.
She decided to open her own spalon in Howard Lake due to the many requests of friends and aquaintances through the years.
Often, friends and aquaintances have wanted to go to her for treatments, but decided not to when they found she worked out of town.
Although Blanchette thought about renting space in one of the current hair and beauty salons in Howard Lake, she was able to get her new space for less than renting a space and she does not have her competition working next to her.
“I’m trying to create a little getaway for people here, so they don’t have to go all the way to the (Twin) Cities, Blanchette said.
At the spalon, customers should not expect to receive the typical chemical treatments available in most salons. Instead, Blanchette is attempting to be as chemical-free in her salon as possible.
Working at Birdwing Spa south of Litchfield for eight years pushed Blanchette in the direction she is heading with natural health and beauty, she said.
“In the industry, I have worked with people who have had to quit because of the allergies they have developed from being exposed to chemicals they become too over-sensitized,” she added.
Customers should not expect to receive hair permanents and colorings that contain chemicals. However, she will be using a natural coloring henna.
Geekquinox offers haircuts and styles, or shampoo, conditioning, and clarification treatments for the hair; head, neck, shoulder, hand, and foot massages; manicures and pedicures; and, facials.
Other services available will be waxing “from the neck up there are some places I just won’t go,” she said, and body wraps with essential oils and muds.
The spalon is open for walk-ins Mondays from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, the spalon will be open by appointment only in the afternoon and evenings. It will also be open Saturday by appointment.
“I’m trying to be flexible,” Cristy said, noting she needs a flexible schedule herself since she and her husband, Darrin, recently adopted a baby, Lily.
Lily was welcomed by older siblings Daisy, 23; John, 21; Darrin, 20; James, 15; Julian, 13; and, Janna, 12.
