LESTER PRAIRIE, MN Installation of the school’s new sprinkler system was well underway when Lester Prairie School Board met July 15, but the location of some of the pipes caused concern among board members.
In some areas of the school, large steel beams created an obstacle for the installation of sprinkler pipes.
In most cases, the pipes were run above the beams.
In some areas, however, there was no space above the beams, so pipes were dropped below ceiling level to avoid the beams.
This raised concerns about appearance and safety.
It was noted that the pipes could be boxed in. However, two of the pipes near stairways raised safety concerns because of their height.
“It’s not acceptable right now,” Board Member Gregg Machemehl said, referring to the location of the pipes.
Superintendent Mike McNulty said Friday that it is not feasible to run the pipes through the beams, but structural changes are possible. Options for covering the exposed pipe are also being considered.
