LESTER PRAIRIE, MN “Sunday morning is the high point of the week,” said Pastor Travis Loeslie, the new leader of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie.
Worshiping with fellow Christians, singing hymns, and reading the Bible are a few things Loeslie loves about Sunday services and he hopes to share that excitement with others.
“We want to be a good, steady place where people can hear about Jesus, and hear that their sins are forgiven in His blood,” Loeslie said. “That’s the best thing we can do for people.”
Loeslie first became interested in pursuing ministry in junior high, while growing up on a farm in Warren (northern Minnesota).
“I had a really good pastor going through confirmation,” he said. “He was infectious to listen to, and he was excited about Scripture.”
Loeslie earned an associate’s degree from Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato in 2005, and a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy from Minnesota State University, Mankato, in 2007.
He met his wife, Stephanie, during his first two years of college at Bethany, where Stephanie’s father served as a professor. They were married in 2008.
After earning his undergraduate degree, Loeslie attended Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, IN. He served as a summer vicar (pastor in training) in eastern Iowa, at Camp-Io-Dis-Ea-Ca and at St. Paul Lutheran Chapel.
Loeslie’s training continued in Oberursel, Germany in 2009, through an exchange program at the Lutherische Theologische Hochschule.
The next move was to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Waco, TX, for Loeslie’s vicarage year. In 2011, the family went back to Fort Wayne, IN for Loeslie’s final year at seminary.
After graduation in 2012, Loeslie served as a graduate assistant in the exegetical department (examining text in Scripture) for the School of Theology and Ministry (STM).
Home to Minnesota
When Loeslie received the call to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, he was excited about returning home to Minnesota.
“It’s a good spot for us,” Loeslie said, explaining that his parents live in the northern part of the state, while Stephanie’s parents are in the southern part.
Loeslie is also happy to be back in a farming community, and enjoys hunting, fishing, and playing basketball in his free time.
“My new hobby is taking care of the kids,” he added. Loeslie and Stephanie have three children Benjamin, 4; Marta, 2; and Miriam, 4 months.
More than 20 pastors attended Loeslie’s ordination service in August, including his older brother Ryan, who is a pastor in Nebraska.
One of Loeslie’s favorite Bible passages is Romans 1:16-17: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: ‘The righteous will live by faith.’”
