DASSEL, MN A Dassel couple are the proud parents of the first baby born in the new year at Meeker Memorial Hospital.
Pregnant with their second child, Christina Handt and Warren Josephson were certain this baby would come early, like their 6-year-old son Logan, who was born a day earlier than expected.
Though Handt was due to deliver Dec. 31, her baby had other plans. “We didn’t go anywhere New Year’s Eve,” Handt said, adding they were waiting patiently, or rather “impatiently.”
Emma Marie Josephson was born four days later, Jan. 4 at 1:44 p.m., weighing 6 pounds, 4 ounces and measuring 20.5 inches long.
Warren hauls oil in North Dakota and came home Dec. 26 to celebrate Christmas and to be there in time for the birth, which they both expected would come sooner, rather than later.
“I didn’t think I’d make it home in time,” Josephson said. “I was home a whole week before she came.”
Handt started having contractions three days prior, but they weren’t close enough to warrant going to the hospital.
It wasn’t until 7:45 a.m. the morning of her delivery that they decided it was time to go in.
Handt was in delivery for about four hours of active labor, which started about 11 a.m., she said.
Emma Marie was the first baby to be born at Meeker Memorial in 2013, and therefore, she and her parents were awarded special gifts and donations, including gift cards to various businesses.
“It was quite overwhelming with the amount of gifts we received,” Handt said, adding that they even received a call Monday informing them there was more coming.
As for Emma, she has been a good baby so far, reported her mother, though she does have her days and nights confused.
This is the third consecutive year that the first baby born at Meeker Memorial Hospital was from the Dassel-Cokato area AJ Bonnifield was born Jan. 6, 2011, to Jerry and Nancy Bonniefield of Dassel; and Makayla Samuelson was born Jan. 6, 2012, to Cecilia and Jerry Samuelson of Cokato.
