Public hearing set for Tuesday, Jan. 22

COKATO, MN – A Watkins restaurant owner is hoping to bring his family’s business model to Cokato and open a second bar and grill.

A purchase agreement has been made between Derek Becker, owner of The Red Goat Bar and Grill and the real estate broker Commercial Realty Solutions for the Daniel’s Family Restaurant building.

The agreement, however, is contingent on Cokato City Council’s approval of a liquor license. A public hearing is set for Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 6 p.m.

Becker, along with his siblings and spouses, has owned the Red Goat Bar and Grill for nearly three years and had been looking around the area for a second establishment. Cokato seemed like the perfect fit.

Becker explained that the family had been exploring different cities and Cokato “seems like the best place for us.”

His wife, Justine, has worked in Cokato for Mykkanen Foster and Waivered Services for 10 years. The couple lives in Kimball, making Cokato a nice proximity for a second family restaurant, Becker noted.

Becker described the Watkins establishment as more of a restaurant than a bar, similar to an Applebee’s, he said. If all goes well, Becker hopes to bring the same model to Cokato.

“We’ve done very well [in Watkins] and we want to continue it [in Cokato],” Becker said.

If granted a liquor license, Becker anticipates the sale to be complete 30 days from the public hearing, with an opening date in the first part of March.

Becker also expects extensive remodeling to take place, including new flooring and redesign to make it look more like their current bar and grill, however, the restaurant would only be closed for about one week.

“We don’t want to disrupt the community too much,” he said, adding breakfast would be added to the Red Goat’s existing menu, which consists of pizzas, burgers, wraps, sandwiches, salads, and weekend dinner specials.

“We’re very excited,” Becker said. “It’s a big adventure for us.”
