DELANO, MN A slow start to summer appears to have slowed momentum for Relay For Life of Delano.
With about one month to go until this year’s annual event, Friday, July 26 through Saturday, July 27, teams are slow to get signed up, slow to attend meetings, and slow to start their fundraising efforts.
Could all this be that with its late start, summer has snuck up on us?
The Relay For Life committee is hoping so, as they strive for record-breaking fundraising at this year’s event.
The committee shares the following goals and current statistics as of June 25:
fundraising goal $100,000; to date $36,507;
registered teams goal 50; to date 23;
registered participants goal 400; to date 226; and
registered survivors goal 100; to date 26.
“We have had such great participation in past relays. We hope that the late spring just simply caught people off guard. I know I was surprised how fast it got here,” stated committee member Sarah Schumacher.
“We not only are low on our goals for the year, but we are struggling to find the man-power to pull off an event of this size.
“We need volunteers in all capacities preparing for Paint the Town Purple (starting Saturday, July 13), the Survivor Dinner (Saturday, July 20), and setup/take down Friday, July 26 through Saturday, July 27.
“Additionally, we are reaching out to the community for donations of money, silent auction items, tent rentals (10-foot-by-10-foot or 20-foot-by-30-foot), and other needs,” Schumacher added.
Anyone interested in participating or volunteering in any capacity is urged to contact the committee at Delano.Relay@gmail.com; or call Nicole Kimball at (612) 532-9603 (call or text).
The next team meeting will take place Thursday, July 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Delano High School. A committee meeting will follow at 7:30 p.m.
