DELANO, MN A school-wide celebration took place last Monday at Delano Elementary School (DES) to recognize a prestigious award from the US Department of Education.
Recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School, Delano Elementary School was one of seven schools in Minnesota and one of 280 schools nationally to receive this award, according to Traci Lawman, superintendent’s assistant/communications coordinator for Delano Public Schools.
At the celebration, Delano Elementary School Principal Darren Schuler welcomed staff, students, special guests, former Delano Elementary educators and community members.
Schuler said that everyone who was at the celebration is what encompasses the greatness of Delano Elementary School.
The National Blue Ribbon celebration included remarks from Superintendent Matt Schoen, who shared his heartfelt congratulations with the students and staff, along with providing a kid-friendly explanation of what a superintendent does for a school district.
“It is an honor to represent and be a community member in Delano,” said State Representative Joe McDonald, who also acknowledged the staff for having an integral part in this success.
By video address, Senator Amy Klobuchar articulated what an incredible accomplishment this is while interacting with the school community, according to Lawman.
In addition, Klobuchar commended students and staff on the excellence displayed in the classroom, and the pride they should be have for “winning this gold medal.”
Along with Klobuchar, Representative Michele Bachmann also shared her congratulations with the crowd via video.
A video highlighting the learning culture that DES has shaped and nurtured was shared with all, and the gymnasium lit up as the students sang their own version of “Roar,” by singer Katy Perry.
Over the past 10 years, Delano Public Schools has consistently demonstrated excellence in academics, culminating in all three of the district’s schools receiving the National School Blue Ribbon Award.
The middle school received this award in 2003, the high school received the award in 2009, and now, the elementary school has received this award in 2013.
