New owner Bryce Deter is excited to work in Delano

DELANO, MN – Lifelong Delano resident Lloyd Griep, 75, may have said “goodbye” to the insurance world a few weeks ago, but that doesn’t mean he’s letting go of his hometown connections.

“I’ve been involved in most everything in Delano, and I hope to continue to be involved in most everything in Delano,” Griep said. “Delano means a lot to me.”

Griep’s last day as Delano’s State Farm agent was July 31, and the new owner, Bryce Deter, took over Aug. 1. Deter is originally from St. Cloud, and had been working for a State Farm agent in that area for the past five years.

“My family and I are so excited to be here,” said Deter, who moved to town in July with his wife and fifth grade daughter. “We built a house right in Delano.”

Deter recently applied for membership with the Delano BNI, and he plans to become involved in the Delano Area Chamber of Commerce.

Ties to Delano
Griep started the Delano BNI about nine years ago, and he and Wayne Estby began the chamber of commerce about 40 years ago.

“I will still be involved in both of them,” Griep said.

A few other organizations Griep has contributed to throughout the years include Toastmasters, the Delano Area Foundation, the Delano Lions Club, the Delano School District, and the Delano American Legion.

“I spent four years in the Navy,” Griep said, adding that he traveled overseas on an aircraft carrier. “I turned 21 in Hong Kong.”

Griep’s military expertise included electronics, communications, and radio.

When he returned to the US, he worked in government jobs before accepting a position with Business Men’s Assurance Company of America.

After about a year, an opportunity arose to join State Farm in Delano.

“I was there 42 years, all in the same location,” Griep said.

For Griep, one of the best parts of his job was hearing from clients. Some would come back several years later to tell him that they were glad he had been there to help them.

“I appreciate all the support I got from the Delano community,” he said.

Retired and loving it
Now that he’s retired, Griep has been concentrating on one of his other skills – dowsing, which involves showing people where to dig wells.

“It’s a lot of fun. I take care of balancing the environment to make it healthy,” he said, adding that he’s been in the dowsing business for 17 years.

Griep already picked up a new hobby in retirement, as well.

“I bought a recumbent trike,” he said. “I’ve had it a month, and I’ve got just over 100 miles on it.”

Griep is married to Pat Jacobson, and has three children, six grandchildren, and two stepsons – one of which is currently deployed to Kuwait.

State Farm clients
Deter said Griep has been very helpful throughout the transition at State Farm in Delano, and it’s been great getting to know his new clients.

“I just love meeting with people,” he said.
