In her first four months at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel, Pastor Carolyn Pflibsen is finding it to be a good fit for her.
Born and raised in Iowa, Carolyn and her pastor husband, Troy, moved to Litchfield in the fall of 2013, after he was called to serve at Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield.
She has served in congregations in Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota. Carolyn and her husband have served in three different congregations together, as well.
“We work very well together,” Carolyn said of her and her husband sharing pastoral duties in the past. “I couldn’t ask for a better partner.”
Pastoring with her husband definitely kept their family of four busy, she said. “You learn to balance things,” she added.
Before started with Gethsemane this past June, Carolyn served six months as interim pastor for a Hector congregation, while her husband has served as pastor for Zion Lutheran Church.
When she received the call to interview at Gethsemane, Carolyn was impressed with not only the church, but the Dassel community overall.
“I’m very impressed with the congregation’s mission and their desire to grow their youth ministry, their focus on reaching out to the community, and their Christian service,” she said.
Those areas were important to her in looking for a congregation in which to serve long-term.
“It’s a good fit,” she said.
Carolyn said she is also impressed with the Dassel community in that it’s not just a town in which to lay one’s head or hat, but a true community in every sense of the word. She mentioned the community’s pride and enthusiasm toward its school district, and the art, history, and culture with the Dassel History Center and the Dassel-Cokato Performing Arts Center.
As an associate pastor at Gethsemane, Carolyn’s duties includes pastoral care, leading worship, and presiding at the sacraments.
She has been specifically called, however, to work in the congregation in youth and family ministry, Christian education, and stewardship.
“The most crucial thing in being a pastor is encouraging others to grow in faith; share that faith that reveals God’s love for the world by living that faith in the lives of service following the example of our Lord Jesus,” she said.
In her free time, Carolyn enjoys learning about other cultures through reading and travel, hand-stitching denim quilts, baking, and spending time with her family.
