The Delano Relay for Life will take place in Central Park in Delano this weekend. The event raises funds for the American Cancer Society.
The event will begin Friday, July 25 at 4:30 p.m., and conclude Saturday, July 26 with a closing ceremony at 5:30 a.m.
Three residents of Delano will be speakers during the event; Craig Schansberg, and Kris and Dan Abrahamson.
Craig Schansberg is Honorary Survivor of this year’s Delano Relay for Life.
He lives in Delano with his wife of nine years, Jeanne, and two children, Devin and Madison.
Craig has worked in home construction/remodeling for the better part of 16 years. He enjoys reading, hunting, cooking, bicycling, and being outdoors.
Craig was diagnosed with bladder cancer in January 2013. After three surgeries and two failed inter-bladder chemo treatments, Craig and his doctors decided it would be best to remove the bladder.
Craig had his bladder, prostate, appendix, and lymph nodes removed Jan. 20, 2014. A neo bladder was constructed from part of his colon to form a new bladder.
The pathology report showed that the cancer was contained to the bladder and had not invaded surrounding tissue.
It has been six months since his surgery, with no sign of cancer returning.
He is very thankful for the support he has received from the community during his recovery from surgery.
Kris and Dan Abrahamson
Kris and Dan Abrahamson are Honorary Caregivers of this year’s Delano Relay for Life.
Kris grew up in Delano and is still connected to the Delano community through her job, relatives, and visiting old friends.
Dan has been a chemistry and biology teacher in St. Michael-Albertville High School for more than 30 years.
They live in Rockford, and will be celebrating their 30th anniversary in a few days.
Kris and Dan like to travel (with some camping and hiking), play cards, give back to the community, and spend time with their four adult children whenever possible. Two of their children live in Minnesota, one in Tennessee, and one in Oregon.
Dan and Kris are both cancer survivors and caregivers.
