DELANO, MN In early 2013, Craig Schansberg and his family heard the word no family wants to hear: cancer.
Schansberg was diagnosed with bladder cancer and, since the diagnosis, has gone through 13 months of doctor visits, five surgeries, and many weeks of treatments.
He underwent bladder removal surgery (radical Cystectomy) Jan. 20, according to his sister-in-law Sandy Schansberg. Surgery took approximately seven hours, and Craig spent a number of days in the hospital following the surgery recovering.
“They were able to create the neo bladder using a portion of his colon,” Sandy Schansberg said last week. “As of today, Craig is doing well. He is working on training his neo bladder.”
Married to Jeanne for eight years, Craig and his wife found each other and wanted to start a family right away. They were soon blessed with twins, Madison and Devin, who are now 7, and are in the first grade at Delano Elementary School.
Just prior to the children’s arrival, they purchased a home in Craig’s hometown of Delano to be close to family members.
“Since Craig works construction, when he is not at work he does not get paid,” Sandy said. “He has missed a tremendous amount of work already.”
Craig’s family and friends have scheduled a benefit Saturday, March 15 from 2-7 p.m. at the Rockford Township Hall (3039 Dague Avenue SE, Buffalo) to help support them.
A championship BBQ pork dinner, featuring Craig’s brother Derek’s world-known team, will be served from 4-6 p.m. with salad, buns, and dessert. The cost for the dinner is $8 for adults and $6 for children under 12 years of age.
Acoustic music by Nick Nielsen, Red Dot Garage, and Stool Pigeons will also be featured. A large silent and live action will also take place.
For more information or to make a contribution to Craig or to the auctions for the benefit, call Sandy Schansberg at (612) 743-1965.
Donations prior to or following the benefit may also be made to: Craig Schansberg Cancer Fund, c/o Crow River State Bank, PO Box 700, Delano, MN 55328.
