DELANO, MN The old seats are gone.
New, plush theater seats, 450 to be exact, now welcome spectators to the Delano Middle School auditorium.
With the installation of a digital sound system and new carpet, phase one of the restoration project is complete.
The restoration effort that began last summer and has drawn support from hundreds of citizens as well as local businesses, corporations and civic groups is entering its second phase. When the restoration is complete, the auditorium will become known as the Delano Performing Arts Center.
Phase two calls for replacement of the lighting system and extending and resurfacing the stage.
The 1975 lights no longer furnish the intensity and variety of illumination required for the musical and dramatic productions staged at Delano High School each year.
In some instances, replacement bulbs are no longer available, resulting in dark areas on the stage.
The auditorium stage has accommodated large performance groups and major dramatic productions doing its 40 year history. The stage shows the effects of this heavy use and badly needs resurfacing.
To accommodate large performance groups, expansion of the stage is also planned. The costs associated with phase two are approximately $50,000.
The theme of phase two is “Be a Star.”
Three star levels are available: Mega Star at $1,000, Super Star at $500, and Shining Star at $100.
Sponsors of stars will have their names inscribed on the wall of recognition in the new performing arts center.
“Be a Star” is an opportunity to make a contribution to education of Delano students well into the 21st century.
As graduation approaches, presenting a Shining Star to a Delano High School graduate is a unique and lasting gift.

Since its opening, the Delano school auditorium has been the venue for hundreds of students and thousands of spectators in a variety of performing arts.
The new Delano Performing Arts Center will continue to offer educational experiences for students and entertainment for families and the community.
