WINSTED, MN South Dakota native Terry Rieck has found plenty to love about Minnesota including her new job in Winsted.
Rieck became the administrator/CEO of St. Mary’s Care Center June 2. She replaced Christina Haupt, who resigned the end of January to pursue a master’s degree in health care administration, while working for HealthEast Care System in St. Paul.
“I hope to look at the facility with fresh eyes,” Rieck said. “I’m planning to learn the systems here, and ask questions to see how we can improve, and maybe make things more efficient.”
Before accepting the position at St. Mary’s, Rieck had been the director of operations at Welcov Healthcare in Mitchell, SD, where she oversaw seven nursing homes.
Her prior experience includes working as an executive director for several Beverly Healthcare/Golden Living skilled nursing facilities, including:
• a 148-bed facility in Mitchell, SD;
• a 70-bed facility in Pierre, SD;
• a 109-bed facility in Mobridge, SD; and
• an 83-bed facility in Milbank, SD.
At the St. Mary’s campus (which is part of the Benedictine Health System), Rieck is responsible for overseeing senior/assisted living at Linden Wood Apartments, long/short-term care, Alzheimer’s care, and outpatient rehabilitation.
“I really enjoy the residents, and working with staff to make their lives better,” she said.
Rieck has a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD. Her first job after college was with the South Dakota Department of Social Services. She later decided to pursue her true passion of working with the elderly.
“I’ve always been interested in nursing homes,” Rieck recalled.
Rieck’s husband, Tim, also enjoys his job, and has been employed with the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks for many years.
The Riecks have two adult children their son lives in Sioux Falls, SD, and their daughter lives in the Twin Cities.
Although this is Rieck’s first time living in Minnesota, she’s visited the state several times.
“We love Duluth; we vacation there just about every year,” she said.
Where Rieck used to live near Mobridge, SD, the climate is drier and windier than in Minnesota.
She’s discovered several perks to Winsted’s weather, despite driving through a blizzard for her job interview in mid-April.
“I like to fish I love all the lakes here,” she said, adding that she also saw a cardinal recently, the first one in decades.
Winsted’s proximity to the metro area is another plus for Rieck.
“It’s very nice being close to the Cities and having a lot of choices,” she said. “What I really enjoy is that every five miles there’s another little town.”
