Dare to dream again
January 12, 2015
by Rev. Keith E. Carlson, Evangelical Covenant Church, Dassel

“I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.” (Joel 2:28)

Do you have any new expectations, new hopes, or new desires for the coming year? Many people use this time to set goals that they hope to accomplish, or begin addressing habits they wish to develop. Others may feel like they are in a loop that just repeats itself, and sometimes in negative ways. They feel “stuck.”

How do you know if that is happening to you? Here is a test. You are in a negative cycle when you no longer have dreams – not the kind of dreams you have while asleep, but the dreams you dream when you are awake. You are starting to drift through life when you feel that the exciting parts of your life have already happened.

What are your hopes and dreams? Are you just expecting to get out of bed tomorrow and make it through the day? Or do you have a dream?

Do you have dreams of becoming more than you are today? Your reaction may be, “I’m already halfway through life, or maybe beyond halfway.” It is never to late to dream about what could be.

These thoughts are generally true for anyone living from day to day, and they are especially true for us as we live out our life in Christ. As we begin a new year, I want to encourage you to be a dreamer.

I hope you will dream about what God desires for you to do in your walk with Him. I want to challenge all of us in the Dassel/Cokato area, to dream about the possibilities God is placing before us as a community, and to become all that God means for us to be.

The prophet Joel wrote of the day when God would “ . . . pour out His Spirit on all people.” At the beginning of 2015, we have an opportunity to let God reveal to us how to open our hearts, and let Him lead us forward by His Spirit.
