LESTER PRAIRIE, MN The Lester Prairie Trail Committee received approval from the city council June 9 to extend the usable portion of the Dakota Rail Regional Trail to the city, and already the group is nearly halfway to its goal for the first phase of the project.
The goal is $20,000, and, as of Thursday, the group had raised $9,420, according to committee member Mary Behrens.
The first phase includes preparing the base and establishing an 8-foot-wide compacted and leveled gravel trail on the 4,400 feet of the trail from McLeod County Road 9 to the road approach nearest the Carver County border.
This will give trail users access to the trail from Lester Prairie to the portion of the trail in Carver and Hennepin counties, which is already paved.
Anyone wishing to donate to the trail project may send check to the city at 37 Juniper Street North, PO Box 66, Lester Prairie, MN 55354.
Checks can also be dropped off at the city office, or in the city hall drop box after hours.
According to the committee, a donation of $100 will pay for 26-feet of trail preparation.
Although the first phase of the project is to provide safe access and make the trail usable, the ultimate goal is to secure a Legacy grant to pave the trail.
