LESTER PRAIRIE, MN A few years ago, Lester Prairie School Board Member Karla Heigl was the only female on the six-person board. After the newest members were sworn in Monday, the ladies outnumber the men.
New board members Mary Otto and Steve Ziermann took the oath Monday, joining Corbey Hentges, who took the oath at the December meeting, and returning board members Heigl, Rollie Radtke, and MerriLea Kyllo.
Otto and Ziermann did not file for office, but received the most write-in votes in November to replace board members Bob Carlson and Gregg Machemehl, who did not file.
Hentges also did not file, and received the next highest number of write-in votes. She was appointed to fill the seat previously held by Matt Klitzke, who filed, but resigned in November because he moved out of the district.
Heigl was elected board chair for 2015, and Radtke was named vice chair.
Monday was the board’s annual reorganizational meeting. The board approved committee assignments and designated Herald Journal as the district’s official legal publication.
The board approved keeping board salaries the same for 2015. Members receive $40 for meetings lasting three hours or less; $90 for meetings between four and six hours; and $140 for meetings lasting six hours or longer.
The board chair receives an extra $15 per meeting chaired, and the clerk receives an extra $30 per meeting. The treasurer receives an extra $15 per meeting; and negotiation chairs receive an extra $10 per meeting.
