The Winsted Arts Council has some events planned that will be fun for people of all ages.
Elementary Art Camp
The Winsted Arts Council is hosting an art camp for children ages 6 to 11. This art camp begins Monday, July 20, through Thursday, July 23 from 9 a.m. to noon.
The camp includes a dance and art portion. The dance part will be taught by Leisha Diers from Just For Kix, a Howard Lake-based dance studio for youth; and the art portion will be taught by Julie Weinbeck Baruch.
Teen Art Camp
Also, the council is hosting an art camp for teens, ages 12 and up, Tuesday through Thursday, Aug. 4-6. Each day, the camp will start at 10 a.m. and end at 2 p.m.
Anne Sawyer-Aitch will help teens create Brazilian Carnival crowns and costumes from feathers, fabric, and bling; and Tim O’Keefe will teach them about the sounds of the Bateria, a section of drummers playing samba in the style of Carnival music.
Sawyer-Aitch is a Minnesota State Arts Board roster artist. She has worked as a puppeteer, arts educator, stilt walker, parade artist, actress, author, and play prop artist.
O’Keefe is the director and Mestre de Bateria of Batucada do Norte, Minnesota’s own Brazilian percussion band.
A puppet show, also hosted by the arts council, will take place Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 4 p.m.
The show is based on the book “Nalah Goes to Mad Mouse City” by Anne Sawyer-Aitch, which is a sequel to “Nalah and the Pink Tiger.”
It will be performed by Seth Eberle and Anne Sawyer-Aitch.
The second annual LEGO Contest will take place at Winsted Summer Festival, with creations on display Friday, Aug. 7 from noon to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, Aug. 8, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Children up to age 12 can participate. There are three age groups: 6 and under; 7 - 9; and 10 - 12; with prizes in each age group.
Felt Fairy House
Fiber artist Amanda Doster will teach how to needle-felt a fairy house out of wool, Saturday, Aug. 1, from 9-11 a.m.
Needle-felting is a process involving poking wool (or other fiber) with a barbed needle until it is felted into the desired shape. It can be used to create both two- and three-dimensional pieces.
Participants can bring their own felting pad and needles, but they are also available for purchase from Amanda for $5. Participants should let the Winsted Arts Council know ahead of time if they plan to purchase them, to ensure adequate supplies.
