Have you ever heard the saying, “Theres no such thing as a free lunch?” I first heard it from my economics teacher in high school. The idea behind the saying is that even if something appears to be free, theres always either a hidden cost to you or the cost gets passed on to someone else.
So, that “free” lunch at work was most likely paid for by the company. That “free” shipping on your Amazon order was made possible by charging you and others higher prices. And that awesome gift you got for Christmas, while it was free to you, was actually paid for by the giver.
Really, there isnt much that is truly free in this world. Somebody always ends up paying for it.
This especially goes for our ticket to heaven. We could never have afforded to pay the price of admission on that one! Thats because every one of us is spiritually poor; all we have to offer God is trash.
Our sinful natures and our sinful actions disqualify us from ever being able to buy our way into a Holy Gods presence. We needed someone to cover the cost; we needed someone to freely pay our way for us. This is why God sent His Son, Jesus Christ.
Jesus is the only One who could afford to pay the admission price into heaven. With His perfect life of obedience to the Father, and with His precious and holy blood, Jesus paid that price on the cross.
With His sacrificial death, He bought it for us all. And when I say “all,” I mean absolutely everyone! His death covers over the sin of everyone who has ever lived or will ever live upon this earth.
But, just like a birthday present, a gift is of no benefit to the one who refuses to accept it. In the Bible, Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
Gods salvation of humanity is a free gift to us. God calls us to turn from our sin and accept His payment on our behalf. Its absolutely free of charge a gift from God to each of us! And this is in spite of our not deserving it.
But thats the point of grace; grace is undeserved kindness. We had nothing in our possession that would allow us to be saved. Jesus had to give us what we needed. So now, it is through faith in Jesus Christ and His perfect payment on the cross that we are saved.
Salvation is only by the grace of God in Christ. He alone could provide this for us, because no one else was sinless like Him.
Im so glad Jesus loved us enough to step in and pay our way by shedding His blood.
Trust in Him today for the forgiveness of your sins.
Call out to Him in prayer and He will hear you.
Seek Him in His Word and you will find Him.
Your admission into heaven has already been taken care of; Jesus, the sinless Son of God paid for your “free lunch” and has given you the gift of eternal life. Receive that gift by faith and trust in Him to care for you.
