HOWARD LAKE, MN Rain, snow, or shine, the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School softball team is hosting its eighth annual Turkey Tagalong 5k race Thursday, Nov. 24.
The event serves as a fundraiser for the softball program. The entry fee for the tagalong is $25, which includes a long-sleeved T-shirt. There will also be coffee, cocoa, water, donuts, and fruit for participants.
“It will also be chip timed, so people who are serious runners will get an official time,” varsity softball coach Chris Johnson said.
The event starts at 9 a.m. Thanksgiving morning, but participants can start checking in or registering at 7:30 a.m. Runners also have the option of pre-registering before Nov. 17, which will guarantee them a T-shirt.
“After, they can absolutely still run, and register up until the day of, but we just can’t guarantee a shirt for them,” Johnson said.
The race will begin at the former middle school parking lot at 801 8th Ave. in Howard Lake. The race will finish at the same location, and runners can also register there the day of the race.
The softball team will also be selling Thanksgiving pies for $5 per pie. All the proceeds from the race will go to the softball team.
“Last year, the girls got new uniform pants,” Johnson said. “We need to sell spots to have money for those kinds of things.”
This year, the proceeds from the race will likely go toward another new uniform item, as well as toward a pitching coach, which was another way the funds were used last year.
“I know the girls want to get some extra training in, so some of the money will go toward training,” Johnson said.
Last year, the event brought in about 200 people.
“It’s a great tradition,” Johnson said. “It’s a great way for people to get out before their big Thanksgiving dinner.”
