LESTER PRAIRIE, MN When the Minnesota Legislature convenes Tuesday, March 8, one of the items to be considered will be the 2016 bonding bill.
The bonding bill will have special significance for users of the Dakota Rail Regional Trail.
Although grant applications for the trail have been submitted in the past, there may be more support for the project this year.
A delegation from Lester Prairie, including Mary Behrens of the Lester Prairie Trail Committee, Lester Prairie Park Board Member Chris Schultz, and Lester Prairie Economic Development Coordinator Adam Birkholz, recently attended a parks and trails event in St. Paul.
Behrens noted the project has received the support of the Parks and Trails Council of Minnesota.
Among the items included in this year’s bonding bill is a $900,000 grant request from the McLeod County Regional Rail Authority to extend the developed portion of the Dakota Rail Regional Trail west through Lester Prairie to McLeod County Road 1 on the west side of the city.
The proposal also includes paving the section of the rail from the Carver County Border to the new section.
The portion of the Dakota Rail Regional Trail in Carver and Hennepin counties is already paved.
The first deadline, for the initial vote on the bonding bill is Friday, April 1.
