DELANO, MN It was a busy week for Jerome and Doris Hanson, of Delano.
Tuesday, Jerome celebrated his 95th birthday.
Wednesday, the couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
The two grew up in the same neighborhood between Maple Plain and Mound.
“I knew his sister real well,” Doris said. “We went roller skating and ice skating together.”
Doris and Jerome graduated together, and Jerome went on to serve in the Army during World War II.
When he returned, the two “got going together,” Doris said.
In 1946, they tied the knot at the Lutheran church in Maple Plain, where Doris has been a lifelong member.
“His brother and a friend of mine were our attendants,” Doris said. “He had just come out of the Army, and we decided not to have a big, glamorous wedding.”
She remembers they honeymooned for about 10 days in Brainerd, Bemidji, and Fargo.
They then returned to their dairy farm.
“It was a lot of long hours and hard work,” Doris said.
In addition to helping on the farm, she carpooled to work at First National Bank in Minneapolis for 41 years, taking a break in the middle to raise daughters Susan and Sharon.
Both their daughters still live in Minnesota and joined the couple Sept. 9 to celebrate the big day at Delano Senior Center, where the two eat lunch each weekday.
The Hansons have lived in Delano for 15 to 20 years.
