DELANO, MN What began as a company specializing in security holograms for government agencies and electronics companies has become Delano’s latest apparel shop.
Cousins Dom Sorenson and Zach Cherrier founded Labelogix USA in Delano in 2010.
While the Labelogix name will remain for the online hologram and label business, the company’s local presence is now LSC Apparel, located at 137 Bridge Ave., a move from the previous location at 234 River St.
The change did not happen overnight. In fact, it took a while to determine what the change would look like.
“After a while, a couple years, we were wondering what else to do. What was our passion?” Sorenson said. “We looked at making and selling soap. We looked at health food products. We looked at oils. Nobody was feeling it.”
While Sorenson was browsing novelty shops in Fort Lauderdale, FL, it just clicked.
“I thought, ‘This is something we can offer,’” Sorenson said.
So, he started looking at what the company needed to buy, and how much space they needed to make T-shirts.
“I went to my landlord at the time, Jeff Vanderlinde, and said, ‘I need more space,’” Sorenson said. “We set up shop in the back of his office. We needed to figure out a system where we could quickly produce T-shirts. We had them cranking out materials, trying everything. We started selling T-shirts like crazy.”
Sorenson said local business people encouraged Labelogix to start producing spirit wear.
To do that, Sorenson and staff moved offices upstairs and remodeled a portion of the main floor to look more like a shop. Without silk screening or embroidery machines, the staff cranked out T-shirts on a hot press.
“We did this until September of 2015, until I had my heart attack,” Sorenson said.
That was a life-altering event for Sorenson, who once again wondered what direction to take the business.
Once again, a vacation helped inspire him.
“I came back, and something just clicked,” Sorenson said. “I said, ‘We need to build a big store, and put our whole company in that store.’ We’re talking let’s bring in embroidery, alterations, tons of silk screening stuff, let’s partner with a merchandizing company and try to build the coolest shop in Delano, something new, something people haven’t seen before.”
All of those plans have come to fruition for LSC Apparel, which officially opened May 18.
Items for sale include water bottles, tin signs, neoprene banners, teddy bears, pompoms, hats, and custom socks.
To display all those items, LSC Apparel has much more space 2,250 square feet compared to about 1,000 square feet, with 300 to 400 square feet of that as shop space at the former location.
“All the apparel there fit on three-fourths of a wall here,” Sorenson said.
LSC Apparel is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, with Saturday hours planned to begin in mid-June.
