MONTROSE, MN Martin Hoekstra has been camping since he was a kid, and now he’s helping other families get into camping, as the owner of Magnum RV in Montrose.
“It’s been a lifelong dream for my wife, Sommer, and I to have an RV dealership,” Hoekstra said.
The Hoekstras first started leasing the building at 135 Nelson Blvd. (Highway 12) March 1, opened April 1.
“This building was actually built for RV service back in 1998,” Hoekstra said. “He rented it out for other things for a little while. Now, it’s back to where it’s supposed to be.”
Magnum RV’s full-time shop opened May 9.
“I went a month without a shop, trying to find the right guy,” Hoekstra said.
Hoekstra believes he’s found the right guy in mechanic Dan Ruzicka.
“He specializes in camper repair, but also does diesel and trailer work,” Hoekstra said.
Since opening the full-time shop, Magnum RV has added mobile service, and will travel to campgrounds or marinas to do repairs on campers or boats.
Hoekstra thought of offering mobile service while at his family’s park model RV on the chain of lakes in Richmond.
“That’s where mobile service came into play,” Hoekstra said. “When we purchased our camper, that wasn’t an option. If we needed any service or warranty work done, we either had to bring it in or do it ourselves. We ended up doing it ourselves because I didn’t like moving everything.”
Since opening in April, Magnum RV has been well-received, Hoekstra said.
“Sales have been going really well: parts, accessories, and the shop has been crazy busy,” Hoekstra said.
While Magnum RV focuses on selling RVs, Hoekstra has helped locate vehicles to pull them, as well.
In the future, Hoekstra would like to have a franchise for a new line of RVs, potentially in about a year.
Hoekstra doesn’t hesitate when asked about his favorite part of the business.
“I love the people,” Hoekstra said. “I’ve never seen an angry person in a campground or doing something they enjoy. My deal is working with the people in this industry, whether it’s sales, or helping them work on their camper, or selling parts. Everyone is really appreciative.”
Before getting into the RV business full-time, Hoekstra worked as a project manager for a construction company, and also owned a small trucking company that operated in three states.
Hoekstra opened Magnum RV with assistance from the Southwest Initiative Foundation’s Microenterprise Loan Program.
Hoekstra and his family moved from Litchfield to Montrose about two years ago.
