DASSEL, MN On the corner of 4th Street and Highway 12 in Dassel, an old foreclosed home used to stand. It was dilapidated beyond repair, but was built on a nice lot in the center of town.
As contractors came and demolished the house, folks wondered who bought the property.
Now, a newly erected building answers that question, with a sign reading Fehn Accounting P.A. overlooking the highway.
Sandra Fehn, the owner, has been doing accounting work in Dassel since 2003. She later partnered with Dassel CPA Don Gordon in 2005, as Fehn and Gordon Accounting, until his retirement in 2009.
Fehn was previously renting space at 650 Parker Ave W in Dassel.
As time went on, Fehn and her husband, Randy, thought it would be good to secure a permanent place in Dassel, since it is a central location for most of her clients.
To do this, they decided to invest in some property, and started their search in 2011. By March 2014, they purchased the 4th Street property.
Their decision proved to be worthwhile when Fehn received word last March that the Parker Avenue office building was going up for sale.
Realizing it was the right time to relocate, Fehn began finalizing construction plans for the new office building at their 4th Street property (following the busy-ness of tax season).
She broke ground in August 2016, and moved into the office at the end of October.
“I welcome people to come in,” stated Fehn, whether they are clients or simply want to check out the new building.
Working with numbers
Fehn has been in the accounting world since 1995, and offers tax preparation, bookkeeping, accounting, and payroll services at Fehn Accounting.
“What I really love is being involved with the business, from doing the books, to payrolls, and seeing that whole circle with the tax return at the end,” Fehn stated.
“It’s a rewarding experience,” she continued. “It’s like I’m a part of something.”
Fehn graduated from Saint Cloud Technical College in the mid 1990s, with an associates degree in accounting; and went on to work for H&R Block in the Buffalo-Annandale area before setting up her own business in Dassel.
She also has a state license as a registered accounting practitioner, is an enrolled agent by the Internal Revenue Service, is an accredited business accountant, and an accredited retirement advisor.
While Fehn is not a certified public accountant, she explained the only area she cannot do is auditing.
In thinking about her work, Fehn said she loves the challenges of the field even during tax season, as every client has a unique situation.
Fehn strives to develop a personal relationship with her clients, which includes providing comfort and the ability to be honest.
“I always tell people when I’m doing a [tax] return, I have to be comfortable with the return going out the door. If I’m not comfortable at all, that return’s not going out the door,” Fehn stated, explaining reasons for discomfort could range from the complexity of the return to her mood that day.
“I [have told] my clients straight out, ‘I need to look at this on a different day,’” she said. “I try to be honest. I flat out tell people. I don’t beat around the bush on anything.”
This approach seems to have worked well for her clients, as word has gotten back to Fehn that her cliental describes her as being personable.
“That, to me, is something to be happy about,” she said.
Fehn Accounting will have extended hours during the tax season starting Monday, Jan. 23, from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays.
Fehn Accounting’s regular hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
