COKATO, MN – After playing in more than 60 countries, pianist and composer Nate Hance will perform at the Cokato Public Library Friday, March 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

“For me, music is my favorite way to express myself,” stated Hance. “As a very shy kid, it was my most comfortable way of communicating and expressing emotions. Though I came out of my shell many years ago, music is still my favorite way to express emotions, to be creative, and to bring the audience on a journey.”

Listeners are not the only ones who get to travel with his music, however. Hance spent three years sailing with Holland America Line as a pianist and bandleader, performing tunes ranging from the top-40picks to ballroom pieces.

“As much as cultures differ around the world, everyone feels emotion when listening to music,” said Hance. “While we may speak different languages, music is something we all have in common.”

With some of my compositions,” he continued, “I ask the audience what images they see when listening, and it varies greatly with what part of the world I’m in, or what generation I’m playing to.”

While traveling to more than 60 countries during his liner years, Hance said his favorite destination was Antarctica.

“It was a place I wouldn’t be able to travel to on my own,” he explained. “It was so pristine, untouched, and bright. I loved watching the seals hang out on icebergs and the penguins so gracefully glide through the water.”

Following his cruising career, Hance spent three years in Denver, CO, composing and recording solo piano music, performing in various bands, directing at Salem UCC, accompanying choirs, and teaching piano lessons. He released his first solo piano CD, “Reawakening,” in 2014.

Throughout his career, Hance has composed pieces, done orchestrations, and written arrangements for almost every instrument and ensemble.

He now resides in Minneapolis, where he continues to compose, book performances, offer piano lessons, and create weekly YouTube videos on his channel.
