MONTROSE, MN Despite a fire that destroyed their garage and resulted in minor smoke and water damage to their home Saturday, Eric and Heidi Proehl declined to accept donations, instead urging concerned community members to give to others instead.
“Donations should go to those truly in need every day,” Eric Proehl wrote on Facebook, adding that family and friends in the area would be helping them out in the immediate future.
“Thank you for all your prayers and well wishes,” Heidi Proehl added. “A special thanks to the fire departments. If you feel led to give, please give to charities. We will be fine; everything is insured.”
Montrose firefighters were paged to the fire at 171 Pheasant Ridge Dr. at 10:25 a.m.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered an attached garage was fully engulfed in flames.
Firefighters were able to quickly knock down the fire and prevent extension of the fire into the living portion of the residence.
The garage and its contents, including a boat, two vehicles, and many tools, were a total loss.
All occupants and animals were safely evacuated and uninjured.
Delano Fire Department, Waverly Fire Department, Ridgeview Ambulance, and the Wright County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Montrose Fire Department.
Firefighters were on scene for about three hours.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the Wright County Sheriff’s Office indicated it may have been started by an improperly extinguished cigarette.
