WINSTED What’s better than a slice of pizza? Maybe pizza with an ice cold beer?
Jayson Dam of Winsted had this thought a few months ago, and has since purchased both Keg’s Bar and HomeTown Pizza Shop. His plan is to offer pizza at the bar, so people can enjoy a meal with their drinks.
“I just had an idea in my head that these two together would work out well,” he said. “It helps the bar and it helps the pizza shop.”
The businesses are conveniently located on the same street in downtown Winsted Keg’s is at 121 1st St. N., and HomeTown is at 145 1st. St. N.
Dam has plans to “freshen up” both locations with some remodeling projects this summer. His goal is for Keg’s Bar to be a comfortable and familiar place where people can stop in with friends, watch football on weekends, and enjoy tasty pizza.
The pizza recipes are staying pretty much the same as before, but Dam said he is always looking for ways to improve the menu.
While the name Keg’s Bar will not change, Dam noted that he might go back to the name Jimmy’s Pizza. The switch from Jimmy’s to HomeTown happened in 2016, when Winsted-native Brenton Hayden purchased the business.
The previous owner of Keg’s Bar was Brian “Woody” Langenfeld, who had owned the business for 20 years. Dam shared that Keg’s Bar has been in Winsted for several decades, and he’s seen photos of it from the 1920s.
“It’s the community’s place,” he said. “I’m just the keeper of it for now. It was here before me, and it’ll be here after I’m gone.”
Dam enjoys learning about the history of Winsted, and plans to incorporate old photos into the decor at Keg’s Bar. He moved to Winsted two years ago, after stopping by to visit the area.
“Everyone was so nice and friendly,” commented Dam, who grew up in South Minneapolis and raised his family in Burnsville.
Throughout his career, Dam has owned businesses in construction and screen printing/embroidery. Although he’s never owned a bar or pizza shop before, he’s looking forward to using some of the same skills.
“It’s doing a good job, and giving people what they want,” he said.
