DELANO, MN Delano Fire Department will be adding a new fire truck to its fleet in 2021.
The council approved the purchase of the new Pierce vehicle featuring a 100-foot ladder, at a cost of $1,315,351 Nov. 19.
It will be ordered in December.
“Over 90 percent of the dollars are in the fire department capital account,” City Administrator Phil Kern said after the meeting. “They’ve been saving over 10 years for this.”
With the purchase of the aerial truck, the city will not be replacing Engine 12, as was initially the plan for three to four years down the line.
The city is also moving toward a regional solution for fire equipment, beginning with conversations with Watertown city staff.
“We view that to be a very promising lead, but we don’t have a firm agreement or structure in place,” Kern said.
New TIF district
The City of Delano closed on the purchase of 125 Woodland Road Monday.
“Prior to doing that, we had two resolutions that enabled the city, in the future, to create a TIF (Tax Increment Financing) district to help with the redevelopment of that property,” Kern said. “ . . . One of them declares the property is substandard. There’s a whole definition in state statute that defines what that means. If we create a TIF district, the city intends to reimburse itself for the transaction.”
An inspection proved that the building is, indeed, substandard. The city plans to reimburse itself for the purchase of the property and demolition with the proceeds of the TIF district.
The TIF district would need to be created within three years of demolition, which is expected to take place in early 2020.
Demolition specifications will likely be on the Tuesday, Dec. 17, city council agenda.
