Take care of the poor, sick, and people
From: Jim Tool, Buffalo
I was sitting in church on Sunday morning when my mind started to wander. The questions that kept bouncing around in my head were: How could the United States be the only industrialized nation to not provide health care for all of its citizens? How could a predominantly Christian nation think it is OK for 50 million people to be without health coverage?
It seems like the Bible is pretty clear about taking care of people who are poor and sick. You do it with a cheerful heart.
The Bible does not promote the idea of increasing the wealth of those who are already rich. But it does address (hundreds of times) the individual and collective responsibility for taking care of the hungry, sick, and needy people.

At the July meeting of the Maple Plain/Independence Police Commission, Independence Council Member Norm Wenck appeared to renew his quest (for a third time) to replace the services of West Hennepin Public Safety with services to be provided by the Hennepin County Sheriff.
Wenck, clearly shrugging off the unusually large public turnout at the May 12, 2009 city council meeting, continued to argue the cost savings of his proposed change, claiming that opposition to his proposal remains misinformed.
He also reportedly claimed that no vote had occurred regarding the making of a recommendation from Independence to the police commission to lengthen the contract period for our police services with West Hennepin Public Safety from the current one year to two years at the May 12 meeting. I was there; so were many of you.
From the minutes of the May 12, 2009 Independence City Council meeting (item #8):
“Motion by Betts, second by Johnson, to have the WHPS contract renewed for a two-year period.
“Motion by Wallace, second by Betts, to amend the original motion to include direction to have the Police Commission consider adding one community member from each City to the Commission.
“Johnson called for a vote on the amendment. All present voted aye.
“Johnson called for a vote on the motion as amended. Ayes: Betts, Gyllenblad, Johnson, Wallace. Nays: Wenck. MOTION DECLARED CARRIED.”
Visit the City of Independence web site for the full PDF of the May 12 city council meeting minutes (see item #8).
It would seem to me that Council Member Wenck is listening to some inner voice rather than the city’s residents on this issue.
Independence’s appointed police commission representatives should present the contract extension recommendation as voted upon to the West Hennepin Public Safety police commission without further delay. Let’s see you walk your talk.
Delano Relay for Life was amazing
From: Matt and Estelle Schaust, Champlin
We were pleasantly amazed at the Relay for Life Friday July 31, in Delano.
How great it is to see so many people working together in the fight to lick cancer. Your town really organized an event we were so happy we were able to attend.
Our appreciation, and we hope to see you all next year.
