6 ripe pears
1 cup red wine
1 cup orange juice
1/2 cup sugar
1 stick cinnamon or 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
3 whole cloves
1 tsp. vanilla
Peel and core pears. Place pears in a saucepan, add wine, juice, and sugar. Cut lemon peel into very fine julienne strips. Reserve lemon for another use. Add peel and spices to saucepan.
Cover, bring to boil, and simmer 10-15 minutes or until pears are tender. Remove pears and simmer liquid an additional 10 minutes or until reduced by half. Pour liquid over pears, cover, and chill. Serve chilled.
