Carver County girl named runner-up for Princess Kay

By Starrla Cray

Carver County Dairy Princess Victoria Haler, the daughter of Rick Haler and Connie Haasken of Waconia, was selected as runner-up for Princess Kay.

The coronation took place at the Minnesota State Fair Aug. 22.

The title of 59th Princess Kay of the Milky Way went to Stearns County dairy princess Christine Reitsma, daughter of Paul and Carolyn Reitsma of Sauk Centre.

In May, Reitsma and Haler were among the 12 dairy princesses throughout the state chosen to compete as a finalist in the Princess Kay competition.

Other local finalists included Carver County Dairy Princess Valerie Grimm, daughter of Joel and Barb Grimm of Waconia; McLeod County Dairy Princess Elizabeth Nix, daughter of Tim and Ann Nix of Plato; and McLeod County Dairy Princess Kelsey Buss, daughter of Kevin and Lori Buss of Hutchinson.

In addition to Haler, Dodge County Dairy Princess Kelsey Mussman, daughter of Mike and Julie Mussman of Claremont, was also chosen as a Princess Kay runner-up. Mussman was also named Miss Congeniality.

Each year at the Minnesota State Fair, all 12 Princess Kay finalists have their likeness sculpted in a 90-pound block of butter. This year marks butter sculptor Linda Christensen’s 41st year carving Princess Kay finalist likenesses.

According to the Midwest Dairy Association, Princess Kay candidates are judged on their general knowledge of the dairy industry, communication skills, personality and enthusiasm for dairy promotion.

Midwest Dairy Association sponsors the Princess Kay program with funds provided by dairy farmers.
