McLeod County Highway Shop is on track for December completion

By Ivan Raconteur

“Things are moving well,” McLeod County Engineer John Brunkhorst said in November of the progress on the new county maintenance shop along Highway 7 east of Silver Lake.

He added that he was hoping for good weather, so crews could wrap up grading on the 9.5-acre site, which is located near the intersection of Highway 7 and McLeod County Road 15 (Falcon Avenue).

Brunkhorst said the project is still within budget, and changes have amounted to less than 1 percent of the $1.2 million cost of the project.

RAM General Contracting of Winsted was awarded the contract for the project.

The architect for the project is Jerry Hagen of Hagen, Christensen & McIlwain of Minneapolis.

The facility will replace two existing facilities in Lester Prairie and Silver Lake.

Ground-breaking for the new shop took place July 24. Brunkhorst said the project is tentatively scheduled to be completed in early December.

Brunkhorst noted the county intends to keep the two existing shop sites for stockpiling of material and intermittent use by other county departments, such as solid waste.

He said the county is open to considering rental agreements with cities and townships for use of the space at those sites. The county is currently negotiating with Silver Lake. Bergen Township has also expressed an interest, according to Brunkhorst.
