HLWW FFA succeeds at nationals

By Starrla Cray

“The most intense part was the banquet,” said Maddie Weninger, one of four Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted FFA food science team members to become national champions the end of October.

When their names were called, Maddie, her sister Abbey (a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls), Keith Lent, and Lauren Painschab didn’t try to contain their excitement.

“We made a scene,” Painschab laughed.

“We almost knocked over our drinks on the table,” Lent added.

HLWW’s FFA general knowledge team also did well at nationals, placing third as a whole. Individually, Savanna Weber placed fourth, Jordyn Tuchtenhagen placed sixth, Jenna Benson took 10th, and Kylee Sherod came in 11th.

The nursery landscaping team at HLWW placed fourth at the national convention. Individually, junior Amanda Olson won fifth place (earning $800), sophomore Zach Uter received 11th place (earning $400), sophomore Chase Lange received 21st place, and sophomore Brennan Barth came in at 50th place.

More about HLWW’s FFA success was printed in the Nov. 9 edition of the Herald Journal.
