Watson Cemetery continues to be cared for in Cokato Township

By Kristen Miller

Watson Cemetery was established in 1874 on 45th St. SW in Cokato Township, off Wright County Road 4.

Named after the late farmer whose land it’s situated on, it was originally affiliated with a Norwegian Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township, according to Cokato Museum Director Mike Worcester.

The sign at the cemetery references Nye Evangelisk Church, a Norwegian-Danish Evangelical Lutheran tradition.

Watson School, which was built a few years later, sat next to the cemetery, referenced Mel Bjur, a past cemetery board member who has family members buried at the cemetery.

Though burials no longer take place there, the cemetery’s neighbors make sure it is still cared for in respect to those buried there.

“It’s a neighborly affair,” Bjur commented. He noted the work of Mike Vetsch, who takes particular care of the cemetery.

According to cemetery records, the last burial was in 1993, for Minnie Johnson Pearson, who lived to be 93.
