Four file for positions in New Germany

Four people have filed in New Germany.

Incumbent Pete Peterson filed for mayor.

Three filed for council – incumbents Marc Trujillo and Shirley Jaeger, filing for the four-year concil terms; and Jim Paul, filing for the two-year council position – the seat that was held by Chip Purcell who resigned in June. Jim Paul was appointed to fill that seat throught the end of the year.

Pete Pederson

Why are you running for office?

Several city projects were started during my first term. I would like to see them finished, and be a part of that process.

What do you think are two major issues at this time, and what do you propose to do about them?

The economy is a huge issue now, and lack of participation by city residents. We have to promote growth and find ways to do it. Our younger residents need to get involved in their government – it’s their future.

Why should you be elected?

Having served one term, I think experience is the best reason, and my continuing positive outlook and dedication to doing the best I possibly can.

Marc Trujillo

Why are you running for office?

I am running because I want to serve the city of New Germany, ensuring that we are in the best possible place to grow and develop.

As a parent, I want to see our city continue to be a safe environment. As a taxpayer, I want to make sure our taxes are used properly, and ensure the tax rate does not become a burden to the homeowners and businesses.

What do you think are two major issues at this time, and what do you propose to do about them?

The first is development and growth. The city has improved its infrastructure by building a new well and water tower, and it has reviewed and revised its 2030 comprehensive plan (ahead of schedule).

With that said, I will do what I can to help our city make good decisions in making plans to attract development and growth.

The other major issue is the safety of the city. I want to make sure we have ordinances that help protect the citizens, that help keep crime down and our city a safe environment, where parents can raise their children with peace of mind.

Why should you be elected?

I should be elected because I have now served the city as a member of the planning commission from 2005 to 2007, and as a member of the city council from 2006 to the present. I believe I can bring the expertise of my experience to the council.

Shirley Jaeger

Why are you running for office?

I feel I am a qualified candidate for the office of city council. I bring approximately 10 years of experience, and have learned a lot about the workings of city government. I will always keep the best interests of the community of New Germany in mind when we make decisions at city level.

What do you think are two major issues at this time, and what do you propose to do about them?

The two issues are tied together. – we have low population and also very little industry. They go hand in hand. People choose to live near their jobs, especially with the trend of higher gas prices.

We need to encourage industry to build up in our city; we are near major highways, with Highway 7, 12, and 212. If we can get industry in our city, I feel the population will then come with that.

I can’t really say I have a plan for that, but we are always open to hear what a new business would have to offer. A few new businesses have started up in the last years and have brought some jobs to New Germany.

Why should you be elected?

I am almost a lifelong resident of the New Germany area, and know most of the people as “my friends.”

As I stated in the beginning, I would always try to keep their best interests in mind when I would make any decisions. Yes, sometimes we do have to raise taxes, but we try to do that little by little, and it is always for a needed project, as was our new water tower and well, which took place in the last year.

I would be honored to serve the city again if the voters choose to elect me.
