Bergen Township Treasurer

Melissa Tonn

Why are you running for office?

I am running for the office of treasurer for Bergen Township. I am running because I want to be involved in my community and get to know my neighbors. Being on the township board gives me the opportunity to provide financial information to the board members that will impact how our tax dollars are spent within our township.

What do you think are two major issues at this time, and what do you propose to do about them?

One of the financial issues facing local governments is the unallotment of state aid. This has caused the need for budget cuts for many towns and townships.

Another issue, given the current economy, is delinquent taxes. Some residents are simply unable to pay their property taxes due to unemployment and other hardships.

The township needs to make a conservative budget each year in order to allow for the possibility of not receiving all of the tax revenue that should be collected according to our annual levy.

My job is to give the board information that helps them to make spending decisions that are in the best interest of the taxpayers and use their dollars wisely.

Why should you be elected?

I feel that I have served Bergen Township well for the past four years. I have learned a lot in my first term as treasurer.

I have helped the board to make some big decisions regarding building projects.

I feel that I have been able to assist them in making sound financing and investment choices for various projects.

I enjoy what I do, and I hope to be able to continue to serve the residents of Bergen Township for another four years.
