HLWW School District 2687 Board Minutes
Monday, November 18, 2002 8:00 P.M.
Howard Lake Media Center
The Regular School Board Meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 8:00 p.m. on November 18, 2002. After the Pledge of allegiance, roll was taken with members present: James Raymond, Charles Weber, Ken Zimmerman, John Lideen, Charlie Borrell, Jim Fowler, and Al Doering. Also present were Superintendent George Ladd, Principals Julie Millerbernd, Dean Wessman, Mike Day, teacher Darrell Smith, teacher representative Brad Robinson, and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.
Chair Raymond opened the floor to approve the Agenda of the November 18, 2002 Regular School Board Meeting, Weber moved to approve the agenda of the November 18, 2002 Regular School Board meeting; Lideen seconded; passed unanimously.
Fowler moved to approve the minutes of the October 21, 2002 Regular School Board meeting; Doering seconded; passed unanimously.
Lideen moved to approve the November bills; Fowler seconded; passed unanimously.
Weber moved to approve the November Treasurer's report; Zimmerman seconded; passed unanimously.
Darrell Smith reported:
The Business Department has been working very hard on developing our web site. It should be up and running this week. Smith also reported Ridgewater College and the school district has an articulation agreement for college credit. The web site is not completed yet, we still have a few links to complete, said Smith. Smith commented he was very proud of his students for completing so many things in only a quarters time.
Principal Wessman reported:
Wessman reported that we had students who tested with language other than English.
December 6th will be puppet shows with the 6th grade.
Thanks to Dan Kleve for the use of Lake Bowl and the free rental of shoes and balls for the fundraiser for Deep Portage.
Today we had peer review; this is the second time in our building, reported Wessman.
TIES gave a presentation on technology on the October 23 early release day. Kyllonen is working with TIES to have a web page for parents to look at a weeks assignment.
Principal Millerbernd reported:
Mr. Otto finished the speech room.
November 11 was Veterans Day; Rev. Bolt of St. James spoke at Winsted Elementary. Mr. Zander spoke at Howard Lake Elementary. After the speakers recognition was made for students with perfect attendance, AR goals, and good citizenship.
November 21 will be the next peer review.
Kindergarten and 1st grade are on tri-mesters, which end November 26.
On October 23rd Howard Lake and Winsted Elementary were named Schools of Excellence. Millerbernd thanked the teachers of Howard Lake and Winsted Elementary for their hard work.
Principal Day reported:
The Veterans program on the 11th was very exciting, and respectful. Day thanked all those who spoke at the program, and Roux and Starr for the Band and Choir performances.
Teacher conferences are tonight in the gym.
Fall musical, Oliver is going on, stop and look at the set; it is wonderful, said Day.
This week is Chemical awareness week, and Jodi Woyke, CD Counselor, is doing a wonderful job.
Public Requests: none
(Item 1) Robinson recommended joining MREA. He reported on a conference that he attended. MREAs first priority is the children, said Robinson. Lideen also commented that MREA put kids first.
Zimmerman moved to approve membership with MREA; Doering seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item 2) Mike Burkhardt presented the audit report for the 2001-2002 school year. Borrell moved to approve the Financial Audit as presented for fiscal year 2001-2002; Zimmerman seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item 3) Dave Sherman, from Midland Insurance gave a brief presentation on property and casualty insurance. Weber moved to approve the Property and causality insurance proposal as presented; Zimmerman seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item 4) Lideen moved to approve the Winter Coaching Staff; Fowler seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item 5) Zimmerman moved to approve the Snow Plow Bid with DESS; Weber seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item 6) Zimmerman moved to accept the letter of resignation; Fowler seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item 7) Weber moved to accept the employment recommendation of:
Russell Koopmeiners- 2hr. cleaner/sweeper in Howard Lake Jill Quaas- High School Special Ed Para, to replace Kris Couchy. 5.5 hrs/day, B-2-2, step 0
Lideen seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item 8) Raymond read the following recognitions:
The Board recognizes HLWW teachers honored recently at the 11th annual Leadership in Educational Excellence (LEEA) banquet: Jane Bayerl, Jeff Granrud, George Montgomery, and Sandy Petterson. This annual event, sponsored by Resource Training and Solutions, honors educators for their dedication to teaching and inspiring students. We congratulate you on this accomplishment, and thank you for your commitment to students of this District.
The Board recognizes Howard Lake Elementary and Winsted Elementary for being recipients of the 2002-2003 School of Excellence Award. We congratulate all the staff, students, community and Principal Julie Millerbernd for their excellent work in achieving this goal.
The Board recognizes Jack Littfin and Littfin Lumber for there donation of trusss to be used for extending the stage. Thank you for your continued support of our school district.
The Board recognizes the Howard Lake Lions and Legion, and the Waverly Lions for their financial support of the High School Handbook and the STAR report. Thank you for your continued support of our school district.
The Board recognizes all the Veterans who attended our Veterans Day program on Monday, November 11th. We would also like to thank: Mr. Day, Mr. Roux, Ms. Starr, the band and choir, and all the students who helped make this an outstanding Veterans Day program.
Zimmerman moved to accept the recognitions; Borrell seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item 9) Superintendent Ladd Reported:
Next Regular School Board Meeting Monday, December 16, 2002, 8:00 p.m., HLWW High School Media Center.
The Board retreat is scheduled for November 23rd at 8:00am, in the High School Media Center, with a speaker from MSBA.
If anyone is interested in attending the MSBA annual conference please let Marilyn know so you can be registered.
We may have excess transportation costs due to special education.
The Veterans Day program was a success. Thank you to all who participated and helped make it a great event.
(Item 10) Committee Reports:
Weber reported Community Education negotiations will be on Thursday.
Lideen reported that Laker Pride does not have the information available for the brochures yet.
Zimmerman thanked all the Veterans who attended the programs in the district.
Raymond reported that Wright Tech has issues with roof repair. Raymond also reported we only have 5 students currently going to Wright Tech.
Doering asked if the Board would consider moving the meetings start time from 8:00pm to 7:30pm. Raymond said it would be difficult for farmers to get to the meetings at that time.
Ladd reported there will be a Buildings and Grounds Committee meeting on December 10th.
