HLWW School District 2687 Board Minutes

Monday October 17, 2005, 7:00 pm.

HLWW High School Media Center

The October 17, 2005, Regular Board Meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 7:02 pm. by Chairman Lideen. After the Pledge of Allegiance, roll was taken with members present: Weber, Custer, Hammer, Doering, Schaible, and Lideen; Borrell arrived at 7:07pm. Also present were Superintendent George Ladd, Principals Mike Day, Dean Wessman, and Jennifer Olson, and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.

Lideen requested the following agenda items be moved to the consent agenda: E, F, I, J; Weber motioned to approve the agenda with the changes; Custer seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item V) Michelle Heuer reported there will be a general community meeting tomorrow at 6:30pm in the auditorium. Lideen reminded the public of the procedure of speaking at the board meetings.

(Item VI, Subd. A) Principal Wessman reported:

• LEEA banquet will be October 26th

• The Systems Accountability Report was published in the Laker

• October 26th is a late start; middle school will be working on special ed training and Rod Janikula will be working with staff on school view and grade book

Principal Day reported:

• We received two thank you letters from students that were displaced because of the gulf hurricanes.

• The first conferences went very well, and school view working very well

• The Fall musical will be at DC

• Band/choir concert tomorrow

• 100 students went to a college fair

Principal Olson reported:

• The elementaries have been very busy September thru October.

• Breakfast participation is steadily increasing

• Climb Theatre presented bullying/violence prevention

• We also received a thank you from students that were displaced from the storms.

• Conferences are this week and next week

(Item VI, Subd. B) Student Council gave a brief update on items they are working on.

(Item VI, Subd. C) Each board member gave a brief update on committees. Weber motioned to approve the brochure with the changes; Doering seconded; passed unanimously.

Borrell motion to accept policies; 413, 414, 415, 506, 522, 524; Doering seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item VI, Subd. D) Ladd reported:

• The SEE regional meeting

• Updated review and comment from the state department

• The van was finally delivered today after a delay of 3 months

• Admin will start looking at the space issues for next year. Will have preliminary info for the next meeting

(Item VII) Hammer motioned to approve the consent agenda with the additions of items E, F, I, and J; Schaible seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item VIII, Subd. A) Borrell motioned to approve the property and liability insurance without the umbrella; Weber seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item VIII, Subd. B) Hammer motioned to approve the assurance of compliance with state/federal law prohibiting discrimination; Custer seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item VIII, Subd. C) Weber motioned to approve the treasurer’s report; Borrell seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item VIII, Subd. D) Borrell motioned to approve the Resolution Appointing Election Judges for the December 13th special election; Schaible seconded; those in favor: Custer, Doering, Borrell, Hammer, Schaible, Weber, and Lideen; none opposed; motion passes unanimously.

(Item VIII, Subd. G) Schaible motioned to approve the pairing in girls’ hockey; Weber seconded; discussion continued; passed unanimously.

(Item VIII, Subd. H) Principal Wessman gave a brief update on the middle school goals.

Principal Day gave a brief update on the high school goals.

(Item VIII, Subd. K) Ladd reviewed the employment recommendations as follows:

The administration recommends hiring Karen Gotz as Holy Trinity Music Teacher replacing Sharon Dake; also Shannon Macken as Holy Trinity Counselor (Please note aid to non public schools days for the positions at Trinity. They receive a set amount of dollars for such positions based on enrollment and the funds flow through the public school system. This money is not available to public schools only to non public); Rita Clark as a special ed para at the middle school; May Stifter as Food Service sub and a few hours as Winsted site breakfast cook; Lisa Bandur as dishwasher at Howard Lake site replacing Jan Comstock; Darlene Fredricks 8hr evening cleaner/sweeper at Howard Lake site to replace Betty Geffer; elementary special ed para positions previously discussed are: Jan Comstock as management aid at Winsted Elementary; Christina Kittock as special ed/ECSE management aid at Humphrey and HL Preschool; Jill Oeffling as special ed management aid at Humphrey; and Jill Wood as management/district aid at Winsted; Kris Bakeberg as ECSE management aid at Winsted and Howard Lake replacing Victoria Entinger.

Weber motioned to approve employment recommendations as stated; Borrell seconded; passes unanimously.

(Item VIII, Subd. L) Lideen read the following recognitions:

The School Board recognizes the 2005 HOMECOMING ROYALTY: King: Ryan Miller; Queen: Amber Cardinal; Prince: Jared Glessing; Princess: Krystal Sawatzke. Congratulations to all of you, and best of luck in the future.

The School Board recognizes CMC PLAYER OF THE WEEK Tim Zander who had 161 yards rushing with 3 touchdowns, plus throwing for a 63 yard touchdown pass, 116 return yards and 5 tackles on defense.

The School Board recognizes Mike and Pam Hinde for helping with the recycling of our old and outdated computer equipment. This was a significant cost savings to the school district. Thank you for your assistance.

The School Board recognizes Matt Arlien and Doreen Lorentz who have been chosen to the Minnesota ACDA Junior High Honors Choir. They will be singing at the Colonial Church of Edina on November 18th at 7pm. Congratulations Matt and Doreen.

Custer motioned to approve the recognitions as read; Hammer seconded; passes unanimously.
