SCHOOL BOARD MEETING

Monday, November 20, 2006

HLWW High School Media Center

The November 20, 2006 Regular School Board Meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 7:04 p.m. by Chairman Schaible. After the Pledge of Allegiance, roll was taken with members present: Hammer, Weber, Custer, Doering, Wiech, and Schaible. Also present were Superintendent George Ladd, Principals Brad Sellner, and Jennifer Olson; absent: Mike Day; Buildings and Grounds Supervisor Steve Strandquist, and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.

(Item IV) Schaible reported student council will not be here tonight. Schaible also recommended removing policy 806; Principal Day is not here but has information for you; under next meeting dates: work session will be December 5th at 7 p.m.; and the regular meeting will be December 18th at 7 p.m..

Custer motioned to approve the agenda with the changes; Weber seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item VI) Hammer read the following recognitions:

The School Board recognizes the teachers honored recently at the 15th annual Leadership in Educational Excellence (LEEA) banquet: Cindy Bowman, Jason Kuehn, Fran Roux, and Andrea Travis. This annual event sponsored by Resource Training and Solutions, honors educators for their dedication to teaching and inspiring students. We congratulate you on this accomplishment, and thank you for your commitment to students of this District.

The Board recognizes all the Veterans who attended our Veterans Day program on Friday, November 10th. We would also like to thank: Mr. Day, Mr. Roux, Ms. Starr, the band and choir, and all the students who helped make this an outstanding Veterans Day program.

The School Board recognizes the Lions Club of Waverly for their donation of $500 to the AVID program. Thank you for your continued support of our school district.

Ladd also reported that Dean Wessman spoke at the elementaries on Veterans Day about the flag.

Weber motioned to approve the recognitions with the addition; Wiech seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item VII) Strandquist reported:

We are almost done with the roofing project at the Howard Lake site

Construction projects are in full swing

Strandquist reported the building inspector required the district to install two emergency exits at the elementary construction sites.

(Item VIII) Weber motioned to approve the consent agenda; Custer seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item IX, Subd. A) Wiech gave a brief update on the building construction.

Middle School roofing project will be done soon.

Reviewed Strandquist’s roll with the buildings and would like to look into having him go full time to buildings and grounds

Bids for lawn mowing and snow blowing will start in January

Reviewed information for materials for playgrounds

No interest in the third lot

(Item IX, Subd. B) Doering motioned to approve the fund six expenses; Weber seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item IX, Subd. C) Ladd reviewed the treasurer’s report. Hammer motioned to approve the treasurer’s report; Weber seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item IX, Subd. D) Schaible reported we have three candidates for the open school board position. They are: Karen Salo of Winsted; Fred Yerke of Waverly; and Paul Weibel of Winsted.

(Item IX, Subd. E) Hammer motioned to approve the seniority list; Wiech seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item IX, Subd. F) Sellner reported the principals will give a brief update on department goals for the district. Principal Olson reviewed the elementary goals.

Principal Sellner reviewed the middle school goals.

Principal Sellner commented briefly on the high school goals.

(Item IX, Subd. G) Weber motioned to approve the child care leave of Pam Hand; Wiech seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item IX, Subd. H) Hammer motioned to approve employment recommendations of Lori Ruopsa; Weber seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item IX, Subd. I) The policy committee recommends the first reading of policy 413-Harassment & Violence; 414-Mandated reporting of child neglect or physical or sexual abuse; 503-Student Attendance; 506-Student Discipline. Custer reviewed the policies.

(Item IX, Subd. J) Hammer motioned to approve policy 613 Graduation Requirements; Custer seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item X, Subd. A) Principal Olson reported:

We served 750 people at the donuts for dad and muffins for moms; Critters and Co gave a presentation on bullying, thank you to Laker Pride, Dianne Youngdahl, Resource Training and Food service for making this a huge success.

Dean Wessman was a speaker at the elementaries for Veterans Day.

December 5th there will be a music program at Winsted Elementary at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and Humphrey Elementary on December 14th at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m..

Schaible thanked Olson for having the students at the ground breaking ceremonies.

Principal Sellner reported:

October 1st was exploratory day

The middle school dance was sponsored by the prom committee and had about 166 students attend

Extended school day program starts tomorrow.

Observations have been started.

The web site is up and running, and very easy to use.

We joined the high school for the Veterans Day program

Deep Portage will be January 17-19

P.S. Minnesota education policy conference December 1st

Resource Training is voting on board positions-ballots are due

Possible re-organizational meeting on January 2nd, with the regular meeting January 16th for normal business items.
