REGULAR SCHOOL BOARD MEETING
Monday June 14, 2010
HLWW Board Room
The June 14, 2010 Regular School Board meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 6:03pm. by Chairman Schaible. After the pledge of allegiance, roll was taken with the following members present: Schaible, Weber, Weibel, Tintes, Wiech, and Doering; absent: Heuer. Also present were Superintendent Brad Sellner, Principals Mike Day, Jim Schimelpfenig, and Jennifer Olson, SMS Financial Consultant, Todd Netzke, and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.
(Item IV) Schaible stated when we review Item G-Bus Lease/Purchase Options we will hand out additional information; there is also and additional recognition, and since the camera will not be taping this evening we will waive reading the recognitions aloud at this time. Doering motioned to approve the agenda with the changes; Tintes seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item V) There were no questions or comments from visitors.
(Item VI) The following recognitions were approved by consensus of the board but not read aloud.
The School Board recognizes the Friends of the Howard Lake Library for providing field trips to the HL Library for each 1st grade classroom, as well as school wide assemblies with the Rose Ensemble education group. Students were able to learn and experience Hawaiian language, music and culture in a unique setting. Thank you for enriching our students’ school experiences!
The School Board recognizes Irene Woitalla and the 40 WONDERFUL volunteers that put together the Fishing Expo for our 4th grade students. This hands-on learning trip is a memorable one for all involved. Thank you for your time and dedication to our students in such a fun way.
The School Board recognizes Josh Westling for two successful field days at the elementary schools by organizing activities, teaming with parents, and providing a healthy outlet for students. Each of the field days were well attended by parents, and an enjoyable time was had by everyone involved. Thank you for your continued dedication to Winsted and Humphrey Elementary Schools!
The School Board recognizes sophomore Laura Pettit who was named the CMC female athlete of the week. Pettit, who plays on the Lakers softball team, was 6 for 10 with two doubles, three RBI’s, a stolen base, and a fun scored over three games. She also pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits while striking out four. Congratulations Laura!! Keep up the good work.
The School Board recognizes seniors Taylor Williams and Jace Whitcomb who were named the Lakers athletes of the 2009-2010 school year. Congratulations Taylor and Jace on a great athletic career at HLWW. We wish you all the best as you meet all your future goals.
The School Board recognizes Kaylee Erickson and Justin Simpson who were awarded the HLWW ExCel Award for the 2009-2010 school year. Congratulations Kaylee and Justin on being chosen. We wish you all the best as you meet all your future goals.
The School Board recognizes Ellie Arvidson and Jake Grangroth who were awarded the HLWW Distinguished Athlete Award for the 2009-2010 school year. Congratulations Ellie and Jake on being chosen. We wish you all the best as you meet all your future goals.
The School Board recognizes Christine Bobrowske and Joe Jaros who were awarded the HLWW scholar/Athlete of the year for the 2009-2010 school year. Congratulations Christine and Joe on being chosen. We wish you all the best as you meet all your future goals.
The School Board recognizes Matt Arlien who received the National School Choral Award and Cassandra Houston who received the John Philip Sousa Award at HLWW’s spring concerts. Congratulations Matt and Cassandra on your choral achievements. We wish you all the best as you meet your future goals.
The School Board recognizes the following sixth grade students who were science fair winners: honorable mention winners: Jordan Kocher, Maggie Miller, Kamran Fogel, Maria Jaros, Anna Schanus, Connor Sherod, Austin Salden, Diana Vidales, Joslyn Munson, Madison Gueningsman and Laura Steffer; third place: Derek Tintes; second place: Jessica Uter and Shelby Kocher; and tied for first place Cole Gagnon and Katie Kruzel. Congratulations to all those who participated and placed in this years science fair.
The School Board recognizes Centra Sota Cooperative-Cokato for donating time, fertilizer and spray for the FFA Crop plot. Centra Sota comes out once or twice to spray and fertilize. Thank you for your continued support of the district and the FFA program.
The School Board recognizes Ryan Chev for donating $2500 to be used toward a new batting cage for the baseball and softball teams. The new batting cage will be housed at the middle school gym. Thank you for your donation toward the baseball and softball teams of our school district.
The School Board recognizes Addie Mucha who donated $60 to the FFA Green House Project. Thank you for your donation and continued support of the FFA Program.
The School Board recognizes Jim Raymond who donated $200 to the FFA Green House project. Thank you for your donation and your continued support of the FFA program.
The School Board recognizes George Ladd and Residential Mortgage Group who donated $100 from their program called “Build your Community”. Thank you for your donation and continued support of the school district.
The School Board recognizes the Citizen State Bank in Waverly who allowed the district to take some boxes to the bank as part of their shredding promotion. Thank you for allowing the district to participate.
(Item VII) Wiech motioned to approve the consent agenda which included the following: May 10, 2010 Regular Board meeting minutes, June bills, enrollment, retirements of Chris Starr Charles Roux, and Paul Fobbe all effective June 10, 2010, resignation of Paul Quast effective June 10, 2010, employment recommendations of Janet Perry and Cindy Decker as health paraprofessionals and Ashley Roemer as a fifth grade teacher, the second reading of policies 709-Student Transportation safety, and 806-Crisis Management; Weibel seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VIII, Subd. A) Curriculum Director Jim Schimelpfenig reviewed the 09-10 science curriculum report.
(Item VIII, Subd. B) Schimelpfenig reviewed preliminary GRAD and MCA testing results.
(Item VIII, Subd. C) Tintes motioned to approve the service and maintenance agreement with Air-On district wide not including food service; Wiech seconded; passed unanimously
(Item VIII, Subd. F) Schaible discussed the food service notification of low account balances. Sellner said Michelle Johnson, Food Service Director, is in the process of reviewing the TIES program.
(Item VIII, Subd. D) Doering motioned to approve the treasurer’s report; Wiech seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VIII, Subd. E) Tintes motioned to approve the original 2010-2011 school year budget; Weibel seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VIII, Subd. F) Discussed earlier.
(Item VIII, Subd. G) Tintes motioned to approve the bus purchase option of buying three buses we have been leasing and start a loan process on purchasing two new buses; Doering seconded; Weber approved the motion with reservations; passed unanimously.
(Item VIII, Subd. H) Weibel motioned to call for the sale of general obligated aid anticipated bonds in the amount of $1,840,000; Tintes seconded; those in favor: Weber, Weibel, Tintes, Doering, Wiech, and Schaible; opposed: none; absent: Heuer; passed unanimously.
(Item VIII, Subd. I) Tintes motioned to approve the police liaison officer based upon a $15,000 fee for the 2010-11 school year and upon approval of the city council; Wiech seconded; Weibel opposed; passed by majority.
(Item VIII, Subd. J) Weber motioned to adopt the resolution establishing dates for filing affidavits of candidacy; Wiech seconded; those in favor: Weber, Weibel, Tintes, Doering, Wiech, and Schaible; opposed: none; passed unanimously.
(Item VIII, Subd. K) Doering motioned to approve the request for quotations; Tintes seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VIII, Subd. L) Weber motioned to approve the AIM Resource contract for 2010-2011 school year; Tintes seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VIII, Subd. M) Superintendent Sellner reported that Wright County Superintendents met with city administrators. We would like to set another board committee to meet a couple of time a year with city administrations and council members to discuss what is happening in the schools and community.
