REGULAR SCHOOL BOARD MEETING
Monday, June 13, 2011
High School Media Center
The June 13, 2011 Regular School Board meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 6:00pm. by Chairman Schaible. After the pledge of allegiance, roll was taken with the following members present: Schaible, Heuer, Wiech, Tintes, and Weibel; absent: Kocher and Weber. Also present were Principals Mike Day, Jennifer Olson and Jim Schimelpfenig; Superintendent Brad Sellner, and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.
(Item IV) Schaible asked to add item L-MOU. Heuer motioned to approve the agenda with the addition; Wiech seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item V) There were no questions or comments from visitors.
(Item VI) Schaible reported there is an additional hire for the consent agenda. Wiech motioned to approve the consent agenda which included May 10, 2011 Regular Board Meeting minutes, June bills, enrollment, resignations of Humphrey Elementary para Elizabeth Peterson effective June 8, 2011, and district wide speech teacher Patricia Landsberger effective June 10, 2011, second reading of policy 533-Wellness policy, employment of Troy Guentzel, high school phy ed, health, and DAPE, replacing Randy Quistorff; Ben Anderson, as a 5th grade teacher, replacing Valerie Haldy; and Jay Krzmarzick 3rd grade teacher, Communications: TIES Executive Committee meeting minutes and a thank you card from Colleen Marketon and the following recognitions:
The School Board recognizes Jackson Houston for being named CMC Player of the week for May 23, 2011. Jackson was 10 for 20 with a home run, 3 doubles, 3 stolen bases and 6 RBI’s in 5 games. Congratulations Jackson, keep up the good work.
The School Board recognizes the following students of the month who were chosen by the teachers and staff of HLWW Middle School: Triston Schwartz, Luke Paulson, Ivy Fesenmaier, Danny Briggs, and Katie Rolfzen. They also received a certificate and have their pictures displayed on the Middle School bulletin board.
The School Board recognizes Samantha Stender for being named CMC athlete of the week for May 16, 2011. Samantha went 2-1 the week prior in 3 conference games. She also pitched 23 innings, scattered 15 hits, struck out 22 batters and gave up only 3 runs. Her ERA that week was 1.68. Congratulations Samantha, keep up the good work.
The School Board recognizes the Winsted Library Board who donated $700 of their silent auction proceeds to Winsted Elementary. Thank you for your donation.
The School Board recognizes the teachers, staff and students for a wonderful and successful school year.
The School Board recognizes Josh Westling for his efforts in the Field Day events at each elementary building. Many families were able to participate in the day, and students, staff, and guests alike all had an enjoyable afternoon participating. Thank you Josh for your hard work and dedication to our students.
The School Board recognizes Carl Heuer who received the National School Choral Award and Kandra Oestreich who received the John Philip Sousa Award at HLWW’s spring concerts. Congratulations Carl and Kandra on your recent awards. We wish you all the best as you meet your future goals.
The School Board recognizes the 2010-11 Softball team and coaches who placed second in the sub-section and placed third in sections. Congratulations to all the players and coaches on a great season.
The School Board recognizes the following track section qualifiers: Quin Leaf-placed second in the high jump, Cody Wren, Josiah Riemer, Jake Thisius, Jake Peterson-placed first in the 400m, Amanda Wiedewitsch, McCall Kleve, Emily Waring, Abby Miller and Becca Plamann. Jacob also set a new school record with a time of 51.03 seconds. Congratulations on your hard work and determination.
The School Board recognizes the following two State Qualifiers in Track: Quin Leaf placed fourth in the high jump, and Jacob Peterson participated in the 400m. Congratulations Quin and Jacob on a great season.
The School Board recognizes Brock Bangasser, Gwen Molihan, Elizabeth Meuleners, and Stephanie Nowak for reaching high achievement in the AR Reading program. Each individual exceeded 200 points earned. Congratulations and keep up the great work!
The School Board recognizes Irene Woitalla and many volunteers for the continued opportunity for the district’s 4th grade students, experiencing the outdoor education classroom. 40 volunteers coordinated by Rosemary’s dedication to students and her son’s passion for fishing is greatly appreciated. Thank you Irene for your ongoing support to our school community.
Wiech motioned to approve the consent agenda; Tintes seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. A) Wiech motioned to approve the waiver agreement with the City of Howard Lake; Weibel seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. B) Heuer motioned to approve the treasurer’s report; Tintes seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. C) Schaible said no motion is necessary since we are staying with our current bank.
(Item VII, Subd. D) Schaible said no motion is necessary since we are not going to use the service at this time.
(Item VII, Subd. E) Weibel motioned to approve the request for quotations; Wiech seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. F) Heuer motioned to approve the language facilitator position; Tintes seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. G) Weibel motioned to approve the TOSA position; Tintes seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. H) Tintes motioned to approve increasing the .5 math position to a full time math position; Wiech seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. I) Wiech motioned to approve SFM as the 2011-12 workers compensation insurance; Tintes seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. J) The levy committee is asking for information from board members about a fall operating levy. The board discussed a fall levy.
(Item VII, Subd. K) Schaible reviewed the committee list.
(Item VII, Subd. L) Weibel motioned to approve a MOU with the superintendent for $5,000; Tintes seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VIII, Subd. A) Principal Olson gave a brief report.
Principal Schimelpfenig gave a brief report.
Principal Day gave a brief report.
(Item VIII, Subd. B) Each board member gave a brief committee report.
(Item VIII, Subd. C) Superintendent Sellner gave a brief report.
(Item IX) Next Meeting Dates:
* Work Session Meeting – Monday June 27, 2011 6pm High School Media Center-not needed at this time
* Regular Board Meeting – Monday July 11, 2011 6pm High School Media Center
Heuer also indicated the breakfast on the farm will be this Saturday.
Wiech reported anything regarding the levy can be directed to Wiech, Heuer, and Schaible.

(Item XI) Wiech motioned to close the meeting to discuss labor negotiation strategies at 7:08pm; Heuer seconded; passed unanimously.
Schaible called the meeting to order at 7:13pm. The board discussed labor negotiation strategies.
Wiech motioned to close the closed meeting at 7:33pm; Weibel seconded; passed unanimously.
Wiech motioned to adjourn at 7:34pm; Heuer seconded; passed unanimously.
