REGULAR SCHOOL BOARD MEETING
Monday, February 13, 2012
High School Media Center
The February 13, 2012 Regular School Board meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD#2687 was called to order at 6:01pm. by Chairman Schaible. After the pledge of allegiance, roll was taken with the following members present: Schaible, Heuer, Wiech, Tintes, Kocher, Weber, and Weibel. Also present were Principals Mike Day, Jim Schimelpfenig, and teacher on special assignment Jason Kuehn; Superintendent Brad Sellner, SMS Financial Consultant Bill Menozzi, and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.
(Item IV) Schaible reported the consent agenda had two requests for retirement from Sandy Petterson, it should only be one, and there is a name correction on the spring coaching staff. Wiech motioned to approve the agenda with the changes; Tintes seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item V) Ben Duske spoke regarding his support of the all day kindergarten option being offered at no charge to parents.
Schaible acknowledged Mr. Jason Mix attending the board meeting.
(Item VI) Schaible reviewed the consent agenda and reminded the board of the changes. Wiech motioned to approve the consent agenda which included the January 9, 2012 Regular Board minutes, February 2, 2012 Work Session minutes, February Bills, February Enrollment, the resignation of Winsted Elementary evening custodian Kerri Lachermeier effective February 8, 2012; resignation of Winsted Elementary evening custodian Tammy Amland effective February 8, 2012; resignation of Head Track Coach Rita Moravec effective January 30, 2012; resignation of SAC Supervisor and Special Ed Para Harriet Confeld effective January 27, 2012; the retirement of Special Education Teacher Sandy Petterson effective the end of the 2011-12 school year; and High School English Teacher Charles Bush effective the end of the 2011-12 school year, the approval of the spring coaching staff; the approval of Jason Mix as the new High School Principal effective July 1, 2012; and part time food service assistant Denise Hertzog, the approval of School Board Committee Assignments, the following communications: Elementary News, Resource Training & Solutions Communicator, January & February Wellness newsletter, and MN No Child Left Behind information, and the following recognitions:
The School Board recognizes CMC player of the week Dylan Youngren. Congratulations Dylan, keep up the good work.
The School Board recognizes CMC player of the week Heather Lehner for the week of January 30, 2012. Heather scored 61 points in three games including the 1000th point of her career. Congratulations Heather, keep up the good work.
The School Board recognizes Jett Leaf for scoring 1000 points for the Lakers. Congratulations Jett, keep up the good work.
The School Board recognizes Bridget Leukuma who broke a 15 year old gymnastics floor routine record with a score of 9.15 out of a possible 10 points. She also helped the team score their season highest score of 127.85. Bridget is a HLWW senior this year and has been with the high school gymnastics program since seventh grade. Congratulations Bridget and keep up the good work.
The School Board recognizes McCall Kleve who broke a 15 year old gymnastics floor routine record with a score of 9.4 out of a possible 10 points. She also helped the team score their season highest score of 127.85. McCall is a HLWW senior this year and has been with the high school gymnastics program since seventh grade. Congratulations McCall and keep up the good work.
The School Board recognizes Dura Supreme for donating $1,500 to the district. Thank you for your generosity and support of our schools.
The School Board recognizes Jackson Houston on being selected sub section #17 Triple A award winner for 2011-2012 school year. Congratulations Jackson.
The School Board recognizes the 2012 Snowfest royalty: King-Jett Leaf, Queen-McCall Kleve, Prince-Riley Whitcomb, and Princess-Ariel Kocher. Congratulations to all of you and best of luck in the future.
The School Board recognizes Michelle Sperle-Berg for writing a Target Field Trip grant and receiving the grant which will be used to take an Anatomy class to the University of MN Medical School. The class will be attending many activities on their field trip. Thank you for your writing the grant to help support of our schools.
The School Board recognizes Humphrey Elementary for recently being nominated by the Minnesota Department of Education for the 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools Award. Congratulations to the administration, staff, students and parents on the nomination. Keep up the great work!
The School Board recognizes Jacob Ross, Bethany Groos, Shelby Dolly, Kyleigh Probst, Alexis Thomas and Stephanie Nowak for achieving 200 AR points. Congratulations on your hard work in reading!
The School Board recognizes Brett Poppler for his design winning entry for the Gathering of Champions logo. Brett was selected out of entries statewide. Thank you for your creativity and congratulations on your recognition!
The School Board recognizes the numerous volunteers (parents, community members, staff, PIE members, and community businesses) who helped make Family Fun Night a huge success. We hope to continue the strong tradition of family fun in the future and appreciate your support.
The School Board recognizes Melanie Lawrence for donating two desks, four-two drawer files, and a chair. Thank you for your donation Melanie and your continued support of the school district.

(Item VII, Subd. A) Heuer motioned to approve the February treasurer’s report; Wiech seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. B) Tintes motioned to approve the adjusted budget report; Wiech seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. C) Tintes motioned to approve the purchase of two buses with camera and GPS systems, and to obtain a loan from a local bank for the purchase; Weibel seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. D) Wiech motioned to approve the all day kindergarten option as presented; Weibel seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. E) Weber motioned to approve the additional 1 1⁄2 custodial time at Winsted Elementary; Heuer seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. F) Wiech motioned to approve an additional 1FTE special education teacher; Heuer seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. G) Weber motioned to approve the 2012-2013 school calendar; Weibel seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. H) Wiech motioned to approve the advertising for lawn mowing at Yager and Winsted Elementary sites; Tintes seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. I) The handbook changes will be on the March agenda for approval.
(Item VII, Subd. J) Weibel motioned to approve a new web site vendor Affinety; Wiech seconded; passed unanimously.
Schaible welcomed Police Liaison Officer Derek who introduced Training Officer Crystal.
(Item VIII, Subd. A) Principal Day gave a brief report.
Principal Schimelpfenig gave a brief report.
Jason Kuehn, Teacher on Special Assignment gave a brief report on behalf of Principal Olson.
(Item VIII, Subd. B) Each board member gave a brief committee report.
(Item VIII, Subd. C) Superintendent Sellner gave a brief report.
