HLWW HS Media Center
The August 6, 2018 Special School Board meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 8:03 pm. by Chairperson Wiech. After the pledge of allegiance, roll was taken with the following members present: Wiech, Lasiuk, Heuer, Bush, Bravinder, Diers and Detlefsen. Also present were Superintendent Brad Sellner and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.
(Item IV) Diers motioned to approve the agenda; Detlefsen seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item V) Wiech asked if there were any questions or comments from the visitors. Heuer asked if people would be given a chance to speak and ask questions once the board starts discussing the football coop. Wiech said yes they can, they should stand and state their name and will be allowed three minutes.
George Montgomery asked if everyone had considered the competitive nature of our students and what it will do to them. Montgomery also stated we are a 2A school and Watertown-Mayer is a 3A school and if we combine we would be asking them to compete at a 4A level.
Bruce Gatz from Winsted said his family is in support of this proposal if this goes through.
(Item VI, Subd. A) Scott Berning, Activities Director, reviewed the proposal for a football coop between HLWW and Watertown-Mayer School District. Berning reported both districts have to agree and then it would go to the Minnesota State High School League to review and approve. Berning indicated the coop would be a 50/50 split and we would be playing Watertown-Mayer’s 3A game schedule and a 4A section during playoffs. Wiech asked when the High School League would be voting. Berning said they would vote tomorrow-Tuesday. Superintendent Sellner reviewed the documentation provided. Heuer asked if there were enough uniforms for each student at each school. Berning said yes. Berning also reported that he and the coaches met with the 9-12 grade students and 79% voted in favor of the coop. Sellner reported there would be some additional costs for transportation but that would be manageable.
Wiech asked if there are any other questions.
Bush called for the question.
Ben Duske said he was not 100% in favor of the coop, but understood it. Duske said there isn’t a lot of community involvement in each district and there could be a potential for bullying.
Kenny Bangasser said he was in favor of the coop. Bangasser said the farthest game would be Glencoe, so there is a transportation savings.
Cory Knott said he went to school here and from a student and athlete standpoint; I’d be in favor of playing the game. Knott said it is up to the two coaches to build a winning culture between the two schools, and there should be accountability to the program results. Knott said he supported whatever decision was made.
Wiech said there was a call for the question.
Diers motioned to approve a Football Coop between Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted School District and Watertown-Mayer School District; Heuer seconded; Detlefsen opposed; passed by majority.
