Lester Prairie School Board Minutes
July 1, 2004
A special meeting of the Board of Education of District #424, Lester Prairie, McLeod County, Minnesota was held on July 1, 2004 in the school media center. Chairperson Fred Blaser called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. Members present were Clerk Robert Carlson, Treasurer Robert Remer, Director Jeff Hecksel, Director Chester Hoernemann (arrived at 7:00 p.m.) and Director Melissa Williams. Staff members present were Joe Miller, High School Principal and Pam Lukens, Elementary Principal. Also present were several members of the public. Names of the public members are available from Clerk Carlson if requested.
Chairman Blaser led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Motion made by Remer, seconded by Carlson to approve the consent agenda and school board minutes for May 21, June 8, 15 and 21 as presented. Motion carried with a unanimous vote.
Chairman Blaser gave a summary of a letter he received from the school district’s attorney Farrish and Johnson. The attorney had indicated there is no specific statute that says the board must open up the hiring process.
Under Open Dialogue several members of the public explained their feeling, concerns and issues in regards to filling the superintendent’s position.
Motion made by Carlson, seconded by Remer to hire Joe Miller as Assistant Superintendent until completion of his Superintendent licensure or certification and at the point he receives his licensure or certification be promoted to Superintendent. Roll call vote needed. Remer; Yes, Carlson; Yes, Hecksel; Yes, Blaser; No, Hoernemann; Yes, and Williams; No. Motion passed on a 4 to 2 vote.
Motion made by Hoernemann, seconded by Carlson to re-write administrative job descriptions and have Asst. Superintendent Joe Miller recommend the hiring of administrative staff. Motion passed with a unanimous vote.
The meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
